Trump wants to keep FBI headquarters in D.C. , not 'three hours away in Maryland'

Source: Maryland Matters

March 14, 2025 10:50 pm

Maryland officials who have fought political and legal battles in their yearslong effort to land the new FBI headquarters in Greenbelt now face a daunting new challenge — geography.

In a speech Friday at the Department of Justice, President Donald Trump (R) said he would stop plans to build the new FBI headquarters in Maryland because it’s “three hours away” from the agency’s current site at 935 Pennsylvania Ave. NW in Washington.

In November 2023, the General Services Administration picked Greenbelt in Prince George’s County as the site of the next home for the FBI and its 7,500 employees. The other two choices were in Landover, also in Prince George’s, and Springfield, Virginia.

All three sites are in or on the Capital Beltway. Google Maps show the Greenbelt site to be 10 to 11 miles from the current FBI headquarters as the crow flies, and about 16 miles by car. “They were going to build an FBI headquarters three hours away in Maryland, a liberal state,” Trump said. “But that has no bearing on what I’m about to say. We’re going to stop it. I’m not going to let that happen.”

The distance from the Justice Department, at 950 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, to Greenbelt is 10.84 miles as the crow flies, or 16.9 miles by car, according to Google Maps. It’s a distance of three hours, according to President Donald Trump.

LOL I am about 150 miles NE of the D.C. metro area here in Philly and if I strictly go the speed limit and include traffic and getting through the tolls (and nightmare at the Ft. McHenry Tunnel), it would take around 3 hours. My normal drive time is about 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 hours (on average after many many trips over a couple decades, where my car(s) knew their way there by heart ).

The (inner) beltway is I-495 (E/W/N/S). As it is, even Baltimore is about a 45 minute drive from that same area as it's about 40 miles away from D.C.

I remember in college when I used to work at the school's radio station and a bunch of us who worked at the station had a convoy of cars going down to D.C. (from Amherst, MA) to attend a broadcasting conference. We had an interesting "convoy pullover" in MD, courtesy of the MD State Police - and this was literally in the middle of the night when we figured that there would be less traffic for what would be a 7 - 8 hour trip (with bathroom breaks) from MA.

(for many segments of it, you can't go anywhere near those speeds and are lucky to do 40 mph due to the poor infrastructure and shared tracks with local commuter lines)

... three hours away??? Greenbelt is so close, it might as well be considered DC. NASA Goddard is located there. The NSA is located there. Some sort of Dept. Of Agriculture facility is located there... a library of some sort.

What a joke. He just wants to punish MD.
