Trump and Putin to speak this week on ceasefire proposal, envoy says

Source: Axios

President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will likely speak this week as part of Trump's push to reach a 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, White House envoy Steve Witkoff said Sunday.

Why it matters: Witkoff met the Russian president for several hours on Thursday. While Ukraine agreed to Trump's ceasefire proposal, Putin refused to accept it unconditionally.

Driving the news: In an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Witkoff described his four-hour meeting with Putin as "positive" and added the discussion was "solutions-based".

  • He claimed Putin accepts "Trump's philosophy" of ending the war with Ukraine.
  • "The two sides are a lot closer today than they were
  • a few weeks ago. We narrowed the differences," Witkoff said.

  • Behind the scenes: Witkoff said Trump is personally involved in the diplomatic efforts with Russia and Ukraine.

  • He said he briefed Trump from the U.S. embassy in Moscow right after the meeting with Putin.
  • Witkoff said Trump held a meeting with his senior advisers on Saturday about the efforts to reach a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine and more discussions are expected to take place today in order to " narrow the differences even further."
  • "We hope to see a ceasefire within weeks," Witkoff said.

Putin it is simple, all Russia has to do is live up to the treaty they signed with Ukraine in the 90's.

He will not expect concessions from putin. But he certainly will for Ukraine.

Ukraine must be admitted to Nato in order to achieve a lasting peace.
Russia should definitely be paying to rebuild Ukraine.
Russia must not lay claim to any Ukranian territory.
Ukraine should not be giving up rare earth minerals to anybody.

The aggressor must atone for the damage caused.

When two children who have never kept a deal, think not keeping a deal is smart, and who are already breaking well established deals, come together to make a deal, it is only theatrics. No deal is possible. No deal can possibly happen that resolves anything.
We don't even have the useless adult shouting Donny, stop that right now! over and over in the distance. All we have is the rest of the kids thinking, we can't ever go to either of these kids parties or houses ever again, even if we like some of their sisters and brothers. Pity the sisters and brothers.

Some kids learn how to find and push their limits. They keep trying. They are willing to go further than the rest of us appreciate. Then there are the kids in the classroom who laugh at these kids antics. As long as these kids keep kicking the weakest children, there are teachers and kids who will support these nasty boys.
