Funding cut for landmark study of women's health

Source: NPR

Updated April 23, 2025 6:00 PM ET

The Trump administration is shutting down most of a landmark federal project studying women's health, stunning researchers around the country.

"It's a huge loss. I can't put into words what a huge loss it is," says Marian Neuhouser, who chairs the steering committee for the federally funded Women's Health Initiative. The study, begun in the 1990s, has produced a series of groundbreaking results and was continuing to gather valuable data about women's health.

The Department of Health and Human Services is terminating contracts with all four regional centers that have been following tens of thousands of women who have been participating in the project for decades, according to the project's coordinating center.

Neither the National Institutes of Health, which funds the study, nor HHS, which oversees the NIH, responded to NPR's questions about the matter. But Neuhouser says HHS notified the project's four regional centers in California, New York, Ohio and North Carolina that their contracts for collecting data will be terminated in September.

Russell Vought to El Salvador. Much of the economic hate and chaos emanates from him, his Christian Nationalist mob, and the Nazi OMB. He has been slinking under the radar far too long. He needs to be exposed and deposed.

7. Women have always been treated as things and sexually used by some men for their own selfishness and social problems

It is so simple even an idiot can understand it -treat another like you would like to be treated but you are too involved in protecting your domination and emotional security to treat women decently. Such an attitude is too predominate in our culture

9. I have been a member of the study since 1996.

As I recall, one had to be 55 to enter the study, and after a few years, new members were no longer accepted.
Therefore, all remaining members of the study are now quite aged - well into their 80' s, as am I.
We have not met in years; all current data is collected by mail, AFAIK.
I look forward to filling out the questionnaires as they arrive, now about once per year.
Much knowledge and good has come from the study. and, like other research work now being discontinued, much will be lost for future generations that could be known for a little more financial backing.

10. Infuriating! Women treated as second class "citizens", women of color; third class! Baby ovens, etc...

Still too many men, and indoctrinated women who are like an enemy, too.

Luckily for me my patents never pushed me to have kids. Not interested. It is fun to be around them at times (my relatives kids, grandkids).

Total honor to good parents; whom ever they are! Don't want anyone thinking I don't appreciate, those who are. 👍
