George Santos sentenced to over 7 years in federal fraud case

Source: ABC News

April 25, 2025, 12:10 PM

Disgraced former U.S. Rep. George Santos was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison -- the maximum -- in a New York federal court on Friday after pleading guilty to a series of fraudulent schemes.

Santos, 36, was convicted of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. He was sentenced to 87 months.

He faced a sentence of 75 to 87 months imprisonment, including a mandatory minimum two-year sentence for aggravated identity theft. He did not take any questions from reporters as he arrived at federal court in Central Islip for the Friday morning sentencing hearing.

In a court filing ahead of Friday's sentencing hearing on Long Island, federal prosecutors requested the maximum possible sentence -- amounting to seven years and three months -- calling his conduct a "brazen web of deceit" that defrauded donors and misled voters.

I get why local officials would let the Feds take the lead but this guy's actions are way beyond egregious.

how socks lost in the dryer end up doing time for failure to pair properly?

Will he get to wear sweaters with his prison togs?

I'm amazed he thought he could get away it.

That took all of ten seconds after seeing the other thread. Yes the lawlessness of Trump still has its moments but the legal system is very much fighting back.

To all those who have pusillanimous tendencies, when have you seen a "We support the Orange Menace manifestation"?

Why? Because “conduct(ing) a ‘brazen web of deceit’ that defrauded donors and misled voters,” as the article puts it, is what the Republican party is all about.

That’s what Republican voters want. They’re addicted to lies, quite literally, and have been for decades now.

There were no victims here. Hell, by Republican standards, there were no crimes committed at all.

If 'Defrauding donors and misleading voters' is a crime than nearly every one of those in office is guilty.

“Where is your remorse? Where do I see it?” she asked as she sentenced him to 87 months behind bars. She said the former politician appeared to feel that “it’s always someone else’s fault.”

Prosecutors sought seven years in federal prison for Santos, arguing in recent court filings that he “remains unrepentant” and has not shown genuine remorse, despite what he claims.

They cited recent comments Santos made on social media in which he cast himself as a victim of prosecutorial overreach.
