Musk floats new party in signal he could torch GOP
Source: Axios
Elon Musk posted a poll to X on Thursday asking followers whether they support the idea of a new political party to take on the Republicans and Democrats.
Why it matters: The richest man in the world is publicly feuding with the most powerful man in America, whom he spent record-setting sums to elect. We're about to find out what he's actually prepared to do about it.
-snip-
The intrigue: Musk had already gone after House Republicans for near-unanimously approving the bill, but it was unclear if he was going to leverage his fortune or his huge platform against them.
Then, Musk posted a tweet that will likely send a chill down the spine of Republican operatives, who were thrilled about the big tent coalition they assembled in 2024 with Musk's help.

Btw, I voted NO in Elon's poll, but the vote is currently more than 83% YES.

(5,017 posts)Musk has destroyed the brand. He made a conscious decision to alienate the vast majority of his customer base (political liberals concerned about the environment) to curry favor with people who hate his product and the environment. Now he has alienated the few of those who would buy his product. His sales are crashing and I don't see them recovering while he has anything to do with the business, including owning stock. If Ford is smart, they will buy the brand for pennies on the dollar when it crashes.

(23,022 posts)Musk has the resources to pull this off in the way that no third-party challenger has previously.
However, if Trump kills SpaceX and Tesla by pulling their various incentives and government contracts, Musk may suddenly not have many resources after all...

I'm seeing Musk get a lot of pushback from Trump loyalists on X, especially over the Epstein tweet.

(4,336 posts)sometimes discuss politics with me, because it's a trigger for both of my issues.
She speculated that as if by some miracle tsf was to be impeached, have his cabinet remove him by the 25 ammendment, or he were to pass due to natural causes, she doesn't think Vance will have the support from the public that tsf does. She said cultists don't usually transfer allegiance from one leader they were devoted to, to his successor. Plus she says she doesn't think Vance does has the type of personality that draws a cult following.
So my guess is you're right that people will side with Trump, over Musk for the same type of reasons. Where my hope lies is Musk has proof of something really damaging on tsf, that isn't public knowledge already, and that can't be swept under the rug as easily. Also that he pulls campaign contributions from all the Rethugs in the house and senate.

(2,750 posts)Granted, not the obscene levels that Musk has, but a sufficient amount. I also think he was a better manager than Musk. He still failed to create a third party.
The same flaw is common between the two: neither wants/wanted to do the hard, boring, unglamorous stuff.
If Elon tries to create a party, it will be for the sole purpose of getting himself elected POTUS. I doubt hell invest in getting Senators etc elected. He wont have anyone running for state legislatures (let alone municipal elections). With no foundation, the whole organization will collapse as soon as he grows bored or discouraged from failure.
And fail he will. Hell micromanage every part of the campaign. He wont seek advice because he knows hes a genius

(5,914 posts)let alone BE president. But we all know what the Constitution means to people of power and money these days. It only matters to those of us patriots who haven't drunk the kool-aid.
Note: I'm so angry at the things I'm reading today in politics, and the idiot things happening around my house, I hit post *before* reading it! (LOL) Oh, for some of Elon's drugs!

Hopefully it will be the ultimate downfall for both of them, and at least start us on a path away from the destruction they've been wreaking.

(27,709 posts)That shows that they can be swayed and a third party could do that especially since Musk controls Twitter which he will surely use to push it.

(7,069 posts)It's designed that way. With that said, there is room for spoilers who can knock out the GOP if they are disillusioned. George H W Bush found that out the hard way. They either voted for Perot or just didn't show up.
