Musk says SpaceX will decommission Dragon spacecraft after Trump threat

Source: CNBC

Published Thu, Jun 5 2025 4:16 PM EDT | Updated 6 Min Ago

Elon Musk on Thursday said that his company SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft “immediately” because of threats by President Donald Trump to cancel government contracts with Musk’s businesses. Musk’s announcement, on his social media site X, came amid an escalating war of words with Trump that began after the Tesla

CEO criticized the major tax bill being pushed by the Republican president. “In light of the President’s statement about cancellation of my government contracts, @SpaceX will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately,” Musk wrote.

Dragon is the only U.S. option for delivering crew to and from the International Space Station. A Dragon capsule brought NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams back to Earth in March after the pair were stranded for months at the ISS by a Boeing Starliner capsule. SpaceX is one of the biggest federal contractors. Since 2008, SpaceX has received more than $20 billion in contracts from NASA, the Air Force and other agencies.

According to SpaceX’s website, “The Dragon spacecraft is capable of carrying up to 7 passengers to and from Earth orbit, and beyond.” “It is the only spacecraft currently flying that is capable of returning significant amounts of cargo to Earth, and is the first private spacecraft to take humans to the space station,” the company says. SpaceX has been developing a replacement for Dragon.

Unless Boeing gets their shit together, there are only 2 entities that can fly to and dock at the ISS - him or Russia.

Not safe at all. The original concept was to have a humongous airplane deliver the shuttle to a high altitude. This was eliminated by Nixon to "save costs", and the fragile big fuel tank was put in place.

Republican math again.

It was just not safe

During a Fox News interview with host Sean Hannity on Feb. 18, Trump said he gave Musk the “go-ahead” to accelerate a mission to retrieve the astronauts, claiming that they had been abandoned on purpose by former President Joe Biden to avoid political backlash. Trump said, “They didn’t have the go-ahead with Biden. He was going to leave them in space. I think he was going to leave them in space. … He didn’t want the publicity. Can you believe it?”

It was not the first time Trump had made such an accusation. On Jan. 28, Trump took to Truth Social to post, “I have just asked Elon Musk and @SpaceX to ‘go get’ the 2 brave astronauts who have been virtually abandoned in space by the Biden Administration.”

During the Hannity interview, Musk claimed that at Trump’s request “we are accelerating the return of the astronauts, which was postponed, kind of, to a ridiculous degree,” saying that “they were left up there for political reasons, which is not good.”

In response to Musk’s claims, several astronauts took to X to refute the idea that the astronauts were purposefully abandoned. Andreas Mogensen, a former SpaceX astronaut from Denmark, posted: “What a lie. And from someone who complains about lack of honesty from the mainstream media.” In response to Mogensen, Elon replied: “You are fully retarded. SpaceX could have brought them back several months ago. I OFFERED THIS DIRECTLY to the Biden administration and they refused. Return WAS pushed back for political reasons. Idiot.”

Mogensen responded by stating, “Elon, I have long admired you and what you have accomplished, especially at SpaceX and Tesla. You know as well as I do, that Butch and Suni are returning with Crew-9, as has been the plan since last September. Even now, you are not sending up a rescue ship to bring them home. They are returning on the Dragon capsule that has been on ISS since last September.”

Now is the time for the military to step in and take over the SpaceX Dragon program, arrange to immediately evacuate the space station as soon as possible of all crew regardless of country affiliation, land them safely, then freeze the entire space program for now. Then both Trump and Musk be arrested for endangering the lives of those astronauts with their childish and irresponsible feud.

US engineers were recruited. Students were urged to become engineers. Telstar was launched. The space race was on and America and our leaders were dedicated to the idea that we would not be caught unprepared again. We got to the moon. And we were proud of that.

This tells me that we have the academics, the research universities and the money and the brains to do this. What I don’t believe we have right now is the steady leadership in Congress or the White House.
