Trump aims to slash Pell Grants, which could limit low-income students' college access

Source: NBC News/CNBC

June 8, 2025, 2:38 PM EDT / Source: CNBC

For many students and their families, federal student aid is key for college access. And yet, the Trump administration’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2026 calls for significant cuts to higher education funding, including reducing the maximum federal Pell Grant award to $5,710 a year from $7,395, as well as scaling back the federal work-study program. The proposed cuts would help pay for the landmark tax and spending bill Republicans in the U.S. Congress hope to enact.

Roughly 40% of undergraduate students rely on Pell Grants, a type of federal aid available to low-income families who demonstrate financial need on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Work study funds, which are earned through part-time jobs, often help cover additional education expenses.

President Donald Trump’s “skinny” budget request said changes to the Pell Grant program were necessary due to a looming shortfall, but top-ranking Democrats and college advocates say cuts could have been made elsewhere and students will pay the price.

“The money we invest in post-high school education isn’t charity — it helps Americans get good jobs, start businesses, and contribute to our economy,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., told CNBC. “No kid’s education should be defunded to pay for giant tax giveaways for billionaires.”

I remember when it used to be called the "BEOG" (Basic Educational Opportunity Grant). When Raygun got in, he froze the max amount (I think it was around $2,500 back then) and then started screwing with the whole thing.

"How are we going to keep those black people picking cotton if we let them go to college?" is what the racist fuck is thinking.

Just so you know, this is how they pick cotton now:

These machines cost $1.3 million each, and you also need a rough terrain forklift to put the modules on a truck so they can be taken to the gin and trucks to haul the forklift and the cotton. A black person who picks cotton is a more successful business person than Trump ever was.

when someone posted those videos and I went down the rabbit hole looking at vids of those machines and how they go row after row, sucking the bolls into the truck and then when full, the baler mechanism inside the truck would compress and then wrap the bolls, finally popping the bales out the back of the truck and onto the field. Then the truck would come back around and grab the bale using a forklift on the front, and deposit it by the road for pickup.

It can tell when a boll is ripe, and only picks the ripe ones. If you look close at the field it didn’t get all the cotton; they’ll come back in a couple weeks and go over the field again.

If you grow “stripper cotton” that gets left in the field until the whole crop is ripe, there’s a different machine for that. They look the same so you can probably buy both a picker head and a stripper head to do both crops.

I would think the "ripe" ones were pretty much ready to "fall off" so they would be easier to get scooped up with not too much pressure versus the immature bolls.

and when will the people stop voting for it? I want to scream at them "THE REPUBLICANS DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU! THEY HAVE NOTHING BUT DISTAIN FOR YOU! WAKE THE HELL UP!"

Not to mention they bring up stupid wedge-issues so people will fight amongst themselves and not notice everything they've taken away from us. And, of course, when the fools finally wake up and realize they're left with nothing, they'll find a way to blame the Democrats. I am so sick of this shit. Every. Single. Day.

Or changed eligibility requirements so few would qualify. I lost my grants and work study when Reagan took office.

Of course it wasn’t socialism for him. He was pulling himself up by his bootstraps. And, there was no way to convince him otherwise. Believe me.
