About 700 U.S. Marines were mobilized Monday to support the California National Guard to protect federal personnel and property in Los Angeles during protests there, officials said. The mobilization of the Marines from their base in Twentynine Palms, California, is temporary, to give time for additional National Guard troops to arrive.
Earlier Monday, President Donald Trump said he would support arresting California Gov. Gavin Newsom for purportedly obstructing federal immigration enforcement actions in Los Angeles.
Trumps comment came shortly before Newsom and state Attorney General Rob Bonta said they would sue Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for deploying National Guard troops to deal with protests over those enforcement actions.
The suit will ask a judge to rule that Trumps federalization of the California National Guard was unlawful and to set aside the presidents order.

(18,800 posts)Do not believe it, and if so, less than 100.
It's already backing firing on shithole.

Why wouldn't it be 700?
Of course it isn't reasonable but Trump isn't reasonable.

(1,320 posts)Currently, he hasn't invoked the Insurrection Act, meaning they don't currently have the authority to arrest people, and are mostly just there for intimidation--but you know these fascists are salivating at the chance to change that at the first possible opportunity.
If the 700 Marines are from their Military Police units MOS 5811, they are trained in crowd control. If they are from their Infantry MOS 0300, might end very poorly for someone wanting to get in a Marine's face and start yelling while waiving a phone in their face.
This could go sideways VERY quickly.

(30,938 posts)They swore an oath to uphold the constitution... they should probably get a copy and brush up on what that means. Following an illegal order isn't going to save them when the time comes for being held responsible. Shooting someone for yelling at them is not part of what is legal for them to do... not for the police, not for ICE, not for the national guard and certainly not for the military.

(52,854 posts)The Act originally applied only to the United States Army, but a subsequent amendment in 1956 expanded its scope to the United States Air Force. In 2021, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2022 further expanded the scope of the Act to cover the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Space Force. The Act does not prevent the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard under state authority from acting in a law enforcement capacity within its home state or in an adjacent state if invited by that state's governor. The United States Coast Guard (under the Department of Homeland Security) is not covered by the Act either, primarily because although it is an armed service, it also has a maritime law enforcement mission.
The title of the Act comes from the legal concept of posse comitatus, the authority under which a county sheriff, or another law officer, can conscript any able-bodied person to assist in keeping the peace.

(12,524 posts)in all kinds of areas, doing baby steps until the Grand Slam is upon us.....It is the Republican way, and they have been chipping away for over 45+ years...........and here we are today............
For instance, the USSC interjecting themselves into the 2000 election, was in no way legal.....Period. They had no authority.....Period Constitutionally or otherwise........Period
However, there was little if any challenge to the USSC usurping that ability to make a decision as monumental as that one.
The worse part of allowing that decision to stand, was the fact that it established a Supreme Court PRECEDENT that from that point forward would allow them to interject themselves as THE final authority and allow them to do it at any time they wished from that point forward......
Cute, huh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am no lawyer, but I will bet there were countless of seemingly small other decisions they made that gave them the Republicans the foundation for future accomplishments.....slowly building on each, one at a time...........
Trump and his CABAL cannot legally do most of the things he is proclaiming, but he just keeps throwing them at walls until some of them stick when no one is noticing, or when they no longer are paying attention and it slips through..........

Do sworn in military members have to swear an allegiance to Donald Trump as well as the country?
Enlistees in the US military swears to defend the Constitution of the US first, then the President of the US and the other officers officers in their chain of command. The placement is deliberate; enlistees must not obey orders, even of the President, that conflict with the Constitution.
Text of the oath:
I, (state name of enlistee), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."
