Trump announces $1,000 government-funded accounts for American babies

Source: The Guardian

Donald Trump unveiled a federal program Monday providing $1,000 government-funded investment accounts for American babies, getting big time backing from top business leaders who plan to contribute billions more to an initiative tied to “the big beautiful bill”.

At a White House roundtable with over a dozen CEOs, including from Uber, Goldman Sachs and Dell Technologies, Trump relayed the details of “Trump accounts” – tax-deferred investment accounts tracking stock market performance for children born between 2025 and 2029.

“For every US citizen born after December 31, 2024, before January 1, 2029, the federal government will make a one-time contribution of $1,000 into a tax-deferred account that will track the overall stock market,” Trump said.

The accounts will be controlled by guardians and allow additional private contributions up to $5,000 annually. Trump called it “a pro-family initiative that will help millions of Americans harness the strength of our economy to lift up the next generation”.

This is a good investment opportunity, I’m sure. I won’t be around to see what happens when these accounts mature, but I’m pretty sure this will end like all his other hare brained ideas.

Just like the Republicans trying to get their greedy mitts on Social Security Funds and Medicare Funds, future Republicans will immediately start trying to figure out away to get their hands on the incredible amount of money that is collected in the next twenty years using this scam.....

https://www.forbes.com/advisor/health-insurance/how-much-does-it-cost-to-have-a-baby/

$1,000. doesn't come close to covering the out of pocket expenses for those women who have insurance, even if it's a non-eventful, normal pregnancy.
Without health care, a situation that many more women will soon find themselves in if that "big ugly bill" gets passed, it's closer to $20,000.

From birth to age 18 it's a whole lot more expensive.

https://www.lendingtree.com/debt-consolidation/raising-a-child-study/

So, the $1,000. is insignificant. It's a sucker deal.

succumbing to fascism and Social Darwinist "health care" governed by anti-science policies. You'd have me to give me seven figures a year for the rest of my fucking life to even consider it.

Hmm, how rich do you need to be to stash $5k in tax-deferred accounts every year? Pretty obvious who's getting the bigger benefits from this account.

Just who are these guardians? Who is going to make the "private contributions"? Seems to me like another way to say, sorry, kids - you should have been born into better families (or at least wealthier ones)

What's the difference between this and just putting this savings bonds? or a College Savings Account? Savings bonds and Savings Accounts are guaranteed, I wouldn't trust Trump! That's how we paid for our son's university degree, with Savings Bonds. He came out ahead-- with money left over. You can put up to $5000 in the Trump account yearly, but YOU put the money in, not Trump, is that right? Another way for him to grift? No thanks, DonOld!

$1,000.00 dollars "is the square root of sweet bugger nothing " when it comes to the full costs of bearing and raising a child.
And, that goes double, with brass knobs on it, if the pregnancy in any way experiences problems.
