Anthony Bernal, the top aide to Jill Biden, abruptly withdrew from his scheduled interview with the House Oversight Committee after President Trump's White House waived his ability to invoke executive privilege to protect private conversations.

Why it matters: Bernal was quietly one of the most powerful people in the Biden White House with regular access to former President Biden as he aged.

The Republican committee chairman said he would subpoena Bernal.

Bernal was also seen internally as a sort of "loyalty police" that created a culture suspicious of dissent.

What they're saying: Republican chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) said in a statement: "Now that the White House has waived executive privilege, it's abundantly clear that Anthony Bernal — Jill Biden's so-called 'work husband' — never intended to be transparent about Joe Biden's cognitive decline and the ensuing cover-up."
