Supreme Court Decision On Birthright Citizenship Could Cause Social Security Number 'Chaos'

WASHINGTON The federal government could have to change how it issues Social Security numbers now that the Supreme Court has said President Donald Trumps order ending birthright citizenship can take effect outside of specific cases where its been blocked by a lower court.
For decades, whenever a baby is born in the U.S., hospitals have notified state vital records agencies, which have in turn notified the Social Security Administration, that a new person needs a Social Security number. The so-called enumeration at birth policy is automatic for the government and simple for parents, who merely check a box on a hospital form.
Trumps order, if it takes effect in 30 days, could make the process more complicated, though neither the Social Security Administration nor the White House responded to requests for comment Friday about how it could change.
Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works, a liberal advocacy group that opposes benefit cuts, said the Supreme Court decision, allowing at least partial implementation of Trumps birthright directive, could create widespread chaos and require more Americans to visit Social Security field offices in order to get Social Security numbers for their babies. The order forbids federal agencies to accept or issue documents recognizing citizenship to babies whose mothers are not lawfully present in the United States.

(26,150 posts)It plainly says any person born in this country is automatically a citizen. Doesn't matter if they're from another galaxy. The Supremes are supposed to be the final say on Constitutional law, but they are either ignorant or just don't care.

We can always trust Wall St. to put people over profit.

(4,095 posts)When at least one parent is a U.S. Citizen, the physical location of the birth becomes largely irrelevant. The U.S. Consulate reviewed our passports, along with the host country's birth certificate, and issued a report of the birth of a U.S. Citizen Overseas. That consular report was then the basis for obtaining a Social Security number from the Social Security Administration. Once the SSAN was issued, the Consulate issued her passport. From her birth to the passport issue took about two months.

Absurd! The highest court in the land makes a mockery of the Rule of Law!

They only decided on 45's whining about "nationwide injunctions", and in this particular case, using them against that ONE particular E.O. about "Birthright Citizenship".
And this is despite the fact that the GOP had been doing "judge shopping" all during Biden's term to funnel stuff into 5th Circuit Districts in order to implement "nationwide injunctions" against Biden! In fact, even during this 2nd term, they have purposely been moving immigrants TO 5th Circuit states in order to ensure the outcome the want - and judges elsewhere have FORCED THEM to move the people BACK to the jurisdictions where the arrest actually happened, when those 5th Circuit states the person was moved to, did NOT qualify for jurisdictional "habeas corpus".
So the GOP just lost their fave attack tactic.
