Don Bacon (NE-R) concerned President Trump's tariffs now weighing on economy of Nebraska, nation

Rep. Don Bacon sees troubling signs that President Donald Trumps tariffs are beginning to weigh on the economies of both Nebraska and the nation.
In an interview with The World-Herald, Bacon noted how Nebraska and Iowa recently posted the nations biggest declines in GDP. He said he has heard from Fortune 500 companies and farmers in Nebraska who claim the tariffs have harmed them.
Then there was last Fridays job report, which showed the nation has posted anemic job growth the past two months a report that led Trump to fire the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
I think shooting the messenger is not a good thing, said Bacon, the Republican who represents the Omaha-based 2nd Congressional District. I think theres some deep concerns going on with Nebraska, Iowa right now.

(374 posts)But you can bet that 99% of his votes until he leaves will be WITH the the guy he says is hurting his constituents. Then, when it is so important for conservative voices to be speaking out to an audience that progressives can't reach, he will be hanging pictures of his days in congress on the walls of his new office at some lobbying firm while he mulls a run for governor.
But you have to wonder if some of what he is saying now will redound to his favor in the long run? In Trump 1.0, many of his worst instincts were suppressed by the people around him that tended to know somewhat what they were doing. The stock market cruised along and the economy generally did well. Then the pandemic came along and was incredibly mismanaged, but it is far easier to find grace for a once-in-a-century event than it is for totally self-inflicted pain. These two things largely muted the effect of his insane philosophies in the first term.
But in the intervening four years, all of the people in both his inner circle and in the Republican party at large that would temper his toddler-like impulses and views of the world have been purged. They have been replaced not by smart but cynical people willing to do his bidding for power or for money, but by people as actually demented and damaged as himself--some even more so.
The concerns that Don Bacon has about Nebraska's economy stem largely from the tariff policy pushed by Peter Navarro--a person that made up a source for an economic theory he could not back up in his book on China and tariffs. What could go wrong now that his fever dream has become reality? A lot. And it increasingly looks like it will. And that will be harder for Republicans to run away from--unless they've already done so and are waiting in the wings to pick up the mantle of what used to be conservatism.

I drove back to Lincoln and Omaha literally dozens of times over those 23 years, driving with my Colorado plates, and wasn't pulled over once.
NOT ONCE.
Now wearing Nebraska gear in Colorado talk about harassment.

.. sorghum produced in Nebraska and Kansas was already sold to China before it was even planted but Trump
killed that off with his fuck nuts trade policies. What did you think Trump would do this time? And BTW how are
Nebraskas meat processing and packing plants doing without Hispanic employees?
Nebraska is a major sorghum-producing state, typically ranking fifth nationally in total production. In 2023, over 225,000 acres were harvested in Nebraska, generating $75.9 million, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. Production is concentrated in the southern part of the state and often utilizes minimum or no-tillage planting systems.
And will Trump and the Republican use taxpayer money to pay the farmers for their losses this time too?
Leopard says, Mmmm that is good bacon.

(148 posts)are already throwing the MAGA voters under the bus..............they are no longer needed, now that they have figured out an iron clad method of fixing any and all elections. Elon and Putin probably assisted them in how to corruptly do it in this last election.
The MAGA crowd have outgrown their usefulness as voters, and will get screwed, right along with all of us Dems.........

How they did it. My
The front end.
True the vote vigilantes got 4 million voters removed from voting prior to the election. Targeting blacks, students, and some Hispanics. Russia emailed bomb threats to targeted precincts too.
The post office got 1/2 a million removed by saying that mail in ballots did not have the right postage.
1/2 million mail in ballots discarded because they said the signatures didnt match. (Pure bullshit because the ballot
comes with a computer scan mark that ONLY GOES TO THE VOTER)
The back end.
Firmware patches were installed on E.S.&E. and Dominion Voting Systems operating systems and central tabulators
Musks Doge boys using A.I. removed millions of voters
Peter Theils Palantir cleaned up the deleted voter records by using a digital janitor that did not change and or delete votes
but hide the evidence that it happened.
10/30/24 Musk turned on 260 low earth orbit satellites that had DTC (direct to cell) contacts via Star Link and that
allowed communications to the firmware parches on the operating systems and central tabulators so the data could be
be looked @ and manipulated. Musk (high as a kite .. my guess) confirmed this on Joe Rogans show. I have a special
app that lets me see the returns early.
The removal of millions of Harris votes lets the republicans say well, she just didnt get the turn out even though she
did get the turn out but those votes just vanished without a trace.

(8,143 posts)So he has to pretend he cares.
He did vote against renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America; a safe vote since he was the only Republican to do so.
Otherwise, he's pretty much a Trump "Yes" button pusher.
But, there is a growing resistance to the whole tariff thing across the country, and he wants to put his "concern" into the consciousness of the voters in his district. Sort of a Susan Collins sort of thing.
His complaint about firing the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggests that there's a lot of backlash against transforming the BLS into a propaganda tool.
But, he has to be careful because he could get on Trump's naughty list and get "primaried".
Independent thinking isn't part of the Republican playbook.
I think he's just testing his leash.

It's amazing how many MAGA voters have no idea what tariffs mean or how they work. Maybe it would be too woke to learn about it.
