Sherrod Brown to run for Senate

Sherrod Brown has decided to run for Senate in Ohio in 2026, according to two people familiar with his thinking, making a play for his old job just months after he was beaten by Republican Bernie Moreno last November.
The Democrat will face off against Sen. Jon Husted, whom Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine appointed to the Senate after JD Vance left his seat to become vice president.
Brown was a top recruit for Senate Democratic leaders in their uphill battle to reclaim the majority in the upper chamber in 2026. He was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006, and survived two hard-fought reelection campaigns, even as Ohios status as a Republican state only crystallized. In 2018, he bested Republican Jim Renacci by a nearly seven point margin, even though President Donald Trump won the state two years prior. In 2024, Moreno won by more than 200,000 votes.
Brown is the only major Democrat to run for the seat, and will likely clear the primary field.

(36,725 posts)He lost to Moreno by 206,434 votes. If he were to win -
It would put the magapub extremists on notice.
He has to attack their culture, their extremism, their deliberate attacks on the American people:

They lie about it and they put in this case, they they spent $40 million on 8 different ads on that issue, Brown argued, later adding. They werent talking about how to make Ohio a better state. Theyre not doing their job on education. Theyre not doing their job on health care. Theyre not doing their job on creating jobs.
After CNN reporter Manu Raju pointed out the campaign was successful and Republicans won the election, Brown responded with his claims.
Yeah, but theyre winning elections in part because they theyve rigged the system. Theyve made it harder to vote, Brown asserted. Theyve changed ballot language in a draconian, in a dramatic way with the last election. They did that with abortion rights. It didnt work in that case.
Husted is an inbred bigot who hates Asians, Black People and the Constitution. He's unAmerican and unPatriotic.

(8,543 posts)It will come out that Harris won Ohio, and every Dem on the ballot. I heard he recently moved to the Columbus area after living in Cleveland. I knew in my heart he won, he always wins....

(911 posts)Sherrod Brown is 72. He was retired by the election and needs to stay in retirement.
Younger people can do the job. There are younger people who are just as pro union as Brown. Let them do the job.
Democrats have a huge problem if he is the best choice. That means Sherrod has squandered his time as a senator and did not build up the bench of Democrats coming behind him.
What a narcissistic and fuck up thing to do.

(1,617 posts)It's not "fucking dumb" to ask someone who is being critical what alternatives they suggest, and it's not respectful language to use towards a fellow Democrat.
It sounds like you have some knowledge of the Ohio political scene. Lay it on us.

(53,095 posts)30 statewide office elections, 7 presidential elections, and 9 US Senate elections of which we have won 10. 5 state wide elections in 2006, the best midterm since at least 1982 and probably 1974. 2 Presidential carried by Obama, and 3 Senate seats all Brown. So in other words outside of 2006 which was the best year in the lifetimes of most voters the only statewide partisan wins we have are Obama and Brown. Brown's birth could be witnessed by Adam and Eve and he still would be our best bet for that seat.

(10 posts)Not a lot of recent Democrats with statewide wins in Ohio.
Brown lost Ohio by four-points in 2024 despite Trump winning the state by double-digits.
That was better than...
Tim Ryan, who lost to Vance by almost seven-points in 2022.
Ted Strickland, who lost to Rob Portman by 21 points, despite being the last Democratic governor there.
Lee Fisher, Strickland's lieutenant governor, who lost to Portman by 17 points in 2010.
And Ohio has moved more to the right since the 2010 senate election.
I wouldn't bet on Brown winning but he'll likely keep it close enough that if things continue to worsen economically, he'll be positioned for an upset.

(16,960 posts)Ohio is what it is, a mostly a homogenious white population, but they did see first hand the hate Trump stirred up against the Haitian community in Springfield. I think that shocked many of those people out of their Trump stupor.
The economy is going to be issues 1, 2,,,100. That's Sherrod Brown's wheelhouse, imo. Even if Trump rolled back his tariffs tomorrow, it will likely take 6 months or more for any significant price decreases to be seen by consumers.

(37,163 posts)If I ask my Westside-Cincy Conservative Catholic family how they feel about how the Haitians in Springfield were treated, they won't have heard a single thing about it, much less have a negative opinion.
Brown is a Democrat. Democrats kill babies. That's the alpha and omega of their political thinking.
