Pentagon considers leasing part of Camp Pendleton to help fund Golden Dome missile defense system

Source: NBC

The Defense Department is considering leasing parts of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, for commercial use, with profits potentially helping fund President Donald Trump’s Golden Dome missile defense project, a current defense official and a former defense official told NBC News.

The base sprawls across more than 125,000 acres of Southern California, less than one-quarter of which is build out, including what the Marine Corps says is the “largest undeveloped portion of coastline in Southern California.”

Marines use some of the undeveloped land’s variety of terrain for training. The beaches are critical to amphibious landing training, for instance, while mountains, desert and rangeland are used in combat readiness drills.

The base, which is about 40 miles from San Diego, is home to the 1 Marine Expeditionary Force and a number of other Marine units and schools. Roughly 70,000 people are on the base most days.

I was alerted to this by a Ron Filipkowski post on Bluesky:

Follow the money on this scam. Miles and miles of prime oceanfront real estate between SD and LA. I’m surprised it took him this long to cook up something on it.

I don't think he's serious about Golden Dome due to the huge cost, most likely on the scale of the current cost to modernize the ground-based ICBMs.

He has already committed to moving the FBI building I think......and he has mentioned the Denver Federal Center.........all prime real estate.......

What other prime real estate can he liquidate? But only if he gets a cut under the table of course.....a "developer" consulting fee!

With all the Federal government workers he is getting rid of, their buildings are soon to be bare and sell able......EPA, Dept of Interior, CDC, what else???????

With all his improvements to the White House, maybe he is planning on liquidating Mar-a-gago and making his new headquarters the WH....
In his mind, he doesn't plan on ever having to leave there, now that the voting is totally rigged.......

It is pristine country, a reminder of what California was, once upon a time. The state needs to keep it tied up in litigation until the asshole is out of office.

"We're only going to lease some of it" is equivalent to "I'm just going to put it in a little."

They'll only want the beachfront property -- for now.

Dementia Don wants to turn Gaza into a resort. He probably got designs on Pendleton for a similar reason. Leasing (with option to buy) this beautiful land in SoCal would be slap in the face to Californians -- and Governor Newsom in particular.

I would like to thank the SCOTUS, AG Garland, Congressional Repukes and all the voters who thought giving a convicted felon, racist sociopath with a history of cruelty and a ruthless need for revenge against his enemies -- real and imagined -- a second bite of the apple was a great idea.

Then the pieces grow and start complaining about the noise.

They will expect any munitions be blanks or training loads. No explosions!

Those helicopters at night? No.

More expansions, more residential.

They get political power and force the base to close.

Rest in Peace MCAS El Toro! (Now, The Great Park)

in the minds of Republicans and simpletons, but isn't remotely practical in its execution. This bunch of incompetents clearly hadn't put any thought into how to even fund it, let alone do anything more than that.

It’s not going to happen he is just throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks. And a lot of retired repuke marines won’t be happy either about this!

The plant was shut down in 2013 after a small leak of radioactive steam. Its owner, Southern California Edison, has been dismantling it for the last few years. More than 3.5 million pounds of nuclear waste is still stored there in steel canisters surrounded by concrete. Jul 25, 2024
