Chief Justice Roberts keeps in place Trump funding freeze that threatens billions in foreign aid

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chief Justice John Roberts on Tuesday temporarily kept in place the Trump administration’s decision to freeze nearly $5 billion in foreign aid.

Roberts acted on the administration’s emergency appeal to the Supreme Court in a case involving billions of dollars in congressionally approved aid. President Donald Trump said last month that he would not spend the money, invoking disputed authority that was last used by a president roughly 50 years ago.

The high court order is temporary, though it suggests the justices will reverse a lower court ruling that withholding the funding was likely illegal. U.S. District Judge Amir Ali ruled last week that Congress would have to approve the decision to withhold the funding.

Trump told House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., in a letter Aug. 28 that he would not spend $4.9 billion in congressionally approved foreign aid, effectively cutting the budget without going through the legislative branch.

rather than malice in most situations. But lately SCOTUS seems to be in complete lock-step with everything Trump wants, and it's starting to look pretty fishy. Granted, these are just decisions on injunctive relief rather than final decisions on the merits, but it sure looks like their lifting of lower court injunctions is just a way of buying them time to come up with some ridiculous academic fake-originalist justification for giving Trump another blowjob. I don't want to be thinking that way, but the ducks are starting to quack an awful lot like ducks.

...the SCOTUS is not bothering to explain their decisions via the "Shadow Docket" so we are simply left in the dark about WHY SCOTUS is ruling the way it is ruling. It almost seems like the SCOTUS is pretty irrelevant now. They keep letting Trump do anything and everything he wants.

The decision on the illegal tariffs will probably drag out for months, giving Trump more free rein.

... been a corrupt weasel. Or, put another way, a loyal Republican. But, given the brazen and blatantly unconstitutional actions of the Orange Gargoyle to which Roberts has essentially said, "sure, why not?", it's not unreasonable to suspect that Trump has something on him, something BIG.

... were all installed by Republicans. If this isn't proof enough that the current method of appointing jurists to the SCOTUS is hopelessly corrupt, I don't know what is.
NO politician, especially the president, should be permitted to nominate potential Supreme Court justices; they should be recommended by a panel of judges with impeccable reputations. All jurists should abjure ANY political association; they shouldn't even vote. That isn't a novel concept; I'm pretty sure it's been done before by individual justices.

Isn’t that what Republicans have ranted and raved against for ages? Now, dead silence. They take hypocrisy to newer and higher levels, daily.
