CEOs of Reddit, Twitch and Discord Called to Testify in Congress After Charlie Kirk Killing

Source: Gizmodo

Many Republicans are blaming social media for the murder of MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk since it’s been revealed the suspect engraved internet meme messages on the bullets and used Discord to allegedly confess to the killing. And now a high-profile congressman wants some of the executives from various tech platforms to testify about it all.

James Comer, the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, released a statement Wednesday calling for the CEOs of Discord, Steam, Twitch, and Reddit to testify at a committee hearing on October 8, 2025.

Discord told Gizmodo in a statement on Wednesday that its CEO would be testifying.

Reddit, Twitch, and Valve (the owner of Steam) didn’t respond to questions emailed on Wednesday about whether their respective CEOs would be attending the hearing. Gizmodo will update this article when we hear back.

5. Reddit has some great, essentially anti-GOP/Trump/fasicst subs. Expecting them to get shut down now.

Discord, Twitch etc aren't mainstream. Someone asked me to join discord, but I don't want to join something that I can't "see ahead of time" and it would be for a very narrow purpose.

I really like the hair and make up forums on Reddit too! Reddit kinda reminds me of the old AOL where I could find advice on just about everything.

Love Gizmodo. Also Techdirt...today's example re general legacy/corporate media...
perhaps tomorrow they'll provide analysis of the hearing's testimony.

Repurposing CBS for use as right wing information warfare machine is one part of a much broader, pathetic failure by major media institutions in response to authoritarianism, which, this week, also involved the Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post firing its last black female columnist simply for quoting Charlie Kirk’s claims that black females are inferior beings.

Countless mainstream media outlets, like the LA Times, CNN, NYT, and ABC (who paid Trump and gave in to his admin’s threats over Jimmy Kimmel) have met the moment with utter fecklessness. It’s been so pathetic it almost feels satirical. (As an aside, people of ethics should stop funding these outlets and give their money to reputable, independent journalists).

Wealthy, (usually right wing) media owners like tax cuts, mindless deregulation, and the government rubber stamping of shitty mergers. Despite decades of furrowed-brow protestations that this doesn’t impact U.S. journalism or editorial independence, you can very clearly see with your own eyes how, when push comes to shove, that’s usually an obvious lie.

Consolidated corporate media was always going to fail us in precisely this way at the worst possible time. Media academics spent more than fifty years warning us. Advice that American media policymakers (across both sides of the aisle) ignored every single step of the way.

Online sites will likely have no choice but to be the underground preservers of free speech that the obedient corporate media censor themselves over, in service of oligarchic tyranny.
