Speaking alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during a cordial meeting at the White House, Trump said that car companies "hurt" the US by setting up operations across the border, placing the two neighbours "in competition".
Carney said he was confident they would "get the right deal" from the US, Canada's primary economic partner.
........................
Trade negotiations between the two countries have dragged on past an August deadline, and Canada remains the only G7 country not to have reached a trade deal with Trump this year.
Illustrating why the two countries have a "complicated" economic relationship, Trump cited the car industry.
"The problem is that they want a car company, and I want a car company," he said. "They want steel, and we want steel... in other countries, they're very far away and there's no problem." .....................................

Asked what was holding up any agreement, Trump responded without hesitation.
"I want to be a great man, too," he said.

(78,562 posts)I listened to some--Carney was pouring on the honey and Trumpy licking it up.
PM Carney knows that Trump has a weakness for flattery. Flattery's effective because everyone has insecurities & loves to be told great things about themselves. He's manipulating Trump!

(33,803 posts)It really makes me uncomfortable. With me, it's not
necessary at all.
For example, more than once a person has tried to
flatter me to get me to play bridge with them.
I nearly always regretted saying yes ... those
partnerships never work out in the long run.
The ones that work are the honest, up-front ones.

Why don't they try a straight forward approach?
Why the unnecessary embellishment?
I don't like it either.

(33,803 posts)they'll say something like they like my
direct, straightforwardness and that
they are not passive aggressive...
and then when I do something they
don't like, what do they do, but turn
into passive aggressive snakes in the
grass.
Me.. if someone does something to hurt
me, I just talk to them about it directly.
It usually works out fine.

So sometimes you have to be patient in communication style.

(78,562 posts)Trump has certainly transformed Canada. Most Canadians no longer want to visit the US. Many don't want to buy US products any more. Canada is now forging new trade and security deals with other (non-US) countries. If the US wants to be more & more isolated, then Trump's your guy.
