Kamala Harris comes out swinging for Supreme Court expansion to take down 'red state cheating'

Source: The Independent

Sunday 17 May 2026 04:54 EDT

Former vice president Kamala Harris has blasted the Supreme Court’s decision to allow states to dismantle Black-majority congressional districts, saying the move allowed Republicans to “cheat” ahead of midterm elections.

“What they have done with this decision, by saying that the politics of redistricting is OK, is they are back-dooring racism through politics,” Harris said on a call with nonprofit organization Emerge on Wednesday. “What they are doing is intentionally… trying to suppress the voice of the people,” she said.

Harris’ remarks follow a decision from the nation’s high court that delivered a massive blow to the 1965 Voting Rights Act in the case of Louisiana v Callais, stating that voters hindered or prohibited from voting due to reasons concerning race must prove they were the victims of “intentional discrimination.”

Speaking to Emerge, Harris raised the idea of Supreme Court reform “including the notion of expanding the court.” Democrats have floated the idea following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 2020, which led to Donald Trump appointing a third nominee to the bench, which has a conservative majority.

Just as they have worked to dilute the voices of black voters in the South. But, I would still prefer to see two of the most corrupt Justices, Alito and Thomas, removed and prosecuted!

Either wouldve been a better alternative.
It irritate me especially after during the 2020 campaign he said, more then once, more than likely he'd be a transitional president.

It's not just the Repukes in the red states, it seems with very few exceptions, they're all on board with it. The R's in purple states have learned to tone it down a little, but maintaining Chump and the R's in power is their only goal, whatever it takes. I'm not sure whether expanding SCOTUS will make a difference - it will in time, but we don't have that luxury. Our ship is taking on water right now.

That poll showing her in fourth place, with AOC in first must have shook things up.

Now, let’s see if anyone else follows suit, and if it moves the needle in presidential polling.

My guess is this statement will trigger some polling questions about the court, including expansion.

These polls are mostly name recognition and “Beauty Contests”, but seeing a shift like this for both Republicans and Dems is attention worthy, despite the minimal predictive value.

It’s important to note that Carter, Clinton nor Obama were even mentioned in pre-midterm polls taken at this point in 1974, 1990 and 2006.

So, who might be flying under the 2028 radar this time?

I would suggest it could be Chris Murphy.

I really like Shapiro but too many people simply wont vote for a Jewish candidate. Just like they wont vote for Sec Pete.
And I dont care WHO it is or who needs to step aside or keep quiet; the ONLY thing that matters is WINNING & beating back the traitorous MAGA cult.

And both are currently polling in low single digits in the Beauty Contest polls.

Beshear is definitely going to run, and Kelly is probably 90% likely to.

I guess that’s what primaries are for, seeing who can make the best case to the people.

Let's see if any other potential Dem canditates have the courage to say the same thing.

It makes for a great rallying cry, but realistically, the chances of it happening are remote at best.

Remember, FDR couldn't do it and he had overwhelming majorities in both houses of Congress.

After last week’s murder of the VRA, I think expansion will become a widely discussed topic, not just the domain of policy wonks and politics nerds.

If congress passed a bill expanding the courts, it would be difficult for a Democratic president to veto it.

Supreme Court says it's ok to discriminate against black Americans if you claim it's because of their politics, not their skin color. This is outrageous, and should not be legal.

We're closer to the white supremacists re-writing the constitution legally than we are to a court expansion. They're on a roll.

Stop communing with racist fascists.
