Trump Just Lost His Most Important Talking Point Thanks to Brutal Poll
Americans are starting to see through Donald Trumps economic promises as he continues to tank the economy with his volatile approach to global trade.
A new poll from The Economist/YouGov, conducted April 1315, shows that Trumps economic approval is at an all-time low. Fifty-two percent of respondents said the economy is getting worse, up 5 percent from Liberation Day, when Trump implemented reciprocal tariffs of 10 percent or more on about 90 countries, sending stock markets plummeting to a generational low. He then rescinded the majority of those tariffs days later (but increased the ones on China), causing confusion and chaos for consumers and small-business owners.
Three-quarters of voters said they thought tariffs will increase the price of goods they buy, and about two-thirds of Americans think the state of the stock market is Trumps fault, according to the YouGov poll.
As data journalist G. Elliott Morris pointed out Friday in a Substack post, Trumps average net economic approval in YouGov polls over the last month is -6 percent, the worst hes ever polled as president. While handling the outbreak of Covid-19 during his first term, Trumps net economic approval rating was 3 percent, Morris noted.

(4,315 posts)...where people live and what they bitched at Joe for ignoring and somehow thought voting for Trump would fix. Going down the twisted illogic of the tariffs and who is doing what to whom and when is distracting and of no good end for us Dems in the time suck it creates. Simply paint the WHOLE GOP with rising prices and increasing economic peril and that THEY are letting it happen. We will remember in the fall of 2026.

(162,022 posts)Why should the public care about Trump's sinking approval rating? Because flailing presidents wield less power domestically and abroad.

Reality, however, continues to get in the way.
The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll found Trumps backing down to just 42%, while just 37% support his handling of the economy.
The latest Pew Research Center poll found Trumps approval rating down to 40%. It also found him underwater on every major policy area. Whats more, the Pew survey found the presidents support among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents down to 75% noticeably lower than Joe Bidens 93% support among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents at this point four years ago.
The latest poll by The Economist/YouGov found Trumps approval rating down to 41%. It also showed him underwater on every issue.
The latest Fox News poll showed Trump with a 44% approval rating down 5 points from March and hes underwater on nearly every issue. On the economy, his support is down to 38%, while on tariffs and inflation, the presidents support is down to 33%.
,,,,,,The answer is simple: Popular presidents wield more power; flailing presidents wield less.
This is true on the international stage foreign officials are more likely to take seriously leaders who enjoy meaningful domestic backing but its also true on Capitol Hill. As weve discussed, members of Congress who, unlike the incumbent president, have to worry about re-election care a great deal about the prevailing political winds.
If the public really were rallying behind Trump and he really did enjoy 70% support, Republican lawmakers might be that much more inclined to follow his lead, while Democratic lawmakers in competitive districts would be that much less inclined to put up a fight against the White House agenda.
But with Americans expressing their increasingly unambiguous dissatisfaction with Trump, it effectively creates a permission structure for Congress to defy the presidents wishes. In other words, the more voters turn against Trump, the harder it becomes for him to get his way which helps explain why he and his allies are scrambling to create an alternate reality in which his support is soaring and skyrocketing, while his approval rating is in the high 70s.
