Military Families Should not go Hungry

As Memorial Day approaches and we turn our attention to family who are gone and veterans who were lost, we must remember the work we have to do to support our members of the military during and after their service.

Between 20-25% of active-duty or veteran families reported being food insecure in the previous 12 months.

Those most likely to be dealing with food access were junior enlisted, unmarried, single income households, had only a high school education, had an unemployed spouse, and had children.

-snip--

But there’s a major factor that our leaders in Washington can easily modernize how SNAP benefits are calculated. Today, SNAP treats the military’s basic housing allowance as unearned income, artificially increasing the income and asset value of servicemembers, and disqualifying many military families from SNAP benefits.
