I wasn’t old enough to be allowed to go to a real concert yet but I’d played his album from the Monterrey Pop Festival endlessly and he was coming to our college (next door) so couldn’t stop me. He played almost note for note, plus a shit ton of other things I was familiar with, so it was pretty cool.

Meanwhile, my brother was allowed to hitchhike cross country after his junior year and saw all the great bands—jumped the stage in Boulder to kiss Janis, saw the Doors, the Mothers, Country Joe, and others in SF, and finally came home after he’d been taken in by the Hell’s Angels and a biker chick insisted she pierce his ear with a knitting needle with an infection ensuing and he called for help getting home in a hurry. The news broke about the Manson murders just a couple weeks after he got home—and yes, he dodged a bullet there as he’d somehow wound up on the periphery. Hard to be pissed off at the fact that he had such freedom when it could’ve turned out so badly.

I was 15 in 1965 and a friend's older brother took us to Montgomery (we lived in Selma) for what was then called The Big Bam concert. The Big Bam was a Montgomery radio station that played top 40 hits and sponsored frequent concerts featuring top 40 artists. It was the height of The British Invasion and there were several British performers featured. The highlight was The Dave Clark Five. I remember a British duo, either Peter and Gordon or Chad and Jeremy, I forget which. I think there was also a female star, might have been Marianne Faithful or somebody like that. Can't remember who else was there. It was, after all, almost 60 years ago.

And handsome as an adult. Honestly, I've known quite a few Mormons and they were all very nice. Except one. My roommate's ex husband. But, he was a bad Mormon. A drinker, smoker and coke freak. Also abusive to my friend.

They were sealed in the temple, too. She had converted just so they could do that. And the church totally supported her and the divorce. Gave her food, she and her two sons got a full-on Christmas, with decorations, a tree, presents, and all the food fixin's. They paid her utilities a few times.

She became a sheriff 's deputy and worked in the Leon county courthouse. They helped her and her kids all the way through her training. Never once did they try to reconcile the family or tell her to go back and try again with counseling. They really walked the walk with her.

5th Dimension at Ball State in 1972 or '73. I was still in high school.

The most incredible concert I ever went to was the "1st Ohio River Festival". University of Cincinnati, August 3, 1975. Nippert Stadium. Tickets were $9.00.

Bands included Aerosmith, Black Oak Arkansas, Foghat, Blue Oyster Cult, REO Speedwagon, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Styx. I got these band names from a poster, not from memory, though I do remember some more than others.

If you read the article I found about it, you will learn why there was never a second Ohio River Festival. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to put in a link to the page. My parents never learned that I went - especially since I went with 3 or 4 friends who were guys. My parents were out of town and my brothers didn't tell them.

I remember some of the stuff reported in the article, but nothing about violence. There was a fence that was torn down, and some people got in that way. I saw that, but none of the "security people's " over-the-top actions. There were people vomiting all over the place. Drugs were being sold out in the open as if they were hot dogs, with the sellers calling the name of their wares to people walking by. One of my friends and I ended up watching the whole event from the outside, where the fence was knocked down. Behind, but to the right of the stage. We could see everything on the stages from pretty close. And, we sat in the shadow of giant air conditioning units for a very close school building that threw out cooling mist, making it probably the most comfortable place in the whole area.

That was probably the closest I ever got to feeling like a hippie. I'm pretty sure that none of my nieces and nephews know that I was that "cool", or at least thought I was.

I remember going to an Elto John concert in Chicago about there were people with signs selling joints or hits of acid right out in the open by the entry doors. There were cops there but they turned a blind eye. I found out later the cops would rather have to deal with people who were high rather than drunk.

they opened for Herman's Hermits! I had no idea who they were, but "I Can See for Miles" was in the Top 40 that summer, so I was aware of them. I didn't know what to make of Pete Townsend smashing up his guitar at the end, though!

Also on the stage that night were Paul Revere & the Raiders, and since I was a huge fan of them, they were actually why I was there. I was in the 3rd row and it was all a glorious experience!

Later that summer, I saw The Monkees with Jimi Hendrix opening for them. That was pretty mind-blowing amazing, too!

Tue Oct 8, 2024, 04:04 AM

was because Herman's Hermits, The Monkees, and Paul Revere & the Raiders really were the headliners. They were all well-known with numerous #1 hits. But The Who and Jimi Hendrix were newcomers. It was 1967, and we were teenyboppers. We had no idea who these new musicians were! I can guarantee we remembered them, though. And of course that was the point.

So in Summer 1965 my mom chaparoned me, my younger sis, and one on our cousins to my sis, and mine's first show in Central Park's then Rheingold Music Festival with above forementioned bands.
What fun!
Later that summer I saw The Beatles at Shea Stadium.

I've seen close to 275 bands/performers, and around 230+ shows till around ?2011.

Would have been close to your count if I count the multi times I've seen some, like have seen Tom Petty almost every year of his touring until he died. He was like my Grateful dead. There was a group of us (like in Friends i guess) we all were together during the 70s recession. We didn't live together but we saw each other every day, ate together and went to concerts, bars and movies together. So we did go to a lot of concerts

It was a young school teacher who taught with my mom and her boyfriend. I was just excited to go. My brother was a few years older but not old enough to drive and he was mortified. He split as soon as we got there to hang out with friends. He ditched the shirt and tie in a fire extinguisher box I think.

I was in 7th grade & he came to town. My cousin offered to let me & my friend tag along with him & his girlfriend. They had better seats than we had but it was exciting & fun to go with someone not your parents & to get to sit alone. This would have been about 1970 when Neil still performed all his early hits. But I've never heard of the dead drummer thing...but know that they've been through a LOT of them.

The 3 core members that I knew of in their heyday are Gordie Johnson, the lead singer/guitarist, Kelly Hoppe, rhythm guitar and odd instruments including harmonica, and the old Jamaican bassist nicknamed Gramps, real name Garry Lowe. Everyone else changed so often I couldn't keep up.

I was 12 and my best friend was 13. His older sister and her boyfriend were seniors in high school. They bought 4 tickets and dragged us along. I got to go because my parents had no idea what I was going to see. The show was at the old Hollywood Sportatorium on the eastern edge of the Florida Everglades. The venue is long gone, but lots of famous bands played there back in the day. I saw Kiss again a year or so later at the same place. Fun times!

It was there that I sort of figured out what I wanted to do with my life. I went on to play in my own bands and do sound for some very famous people over the years. I mostly worked for a local sound company in south Florida so most of the shows I worked were one-offs. I don't play or run sound anymore, but I still help to sell the equipment used at concerts today.

The seats by the front tip of the front petal I gave to one of my best friends who was a Big RS fan. She took her boyfriend at the time, and had a blast; which made me happy.

My sis, and I got the ?2nd tier seats but flush with stage. We had a good time. 👍

There was so much deafening crowd noise and it was packed - even as far as the outskirts of the concert - but two high school friends and I were thrilled and jumping as we heard the 'Fab 4' echoing over it now and then and spotted them.

Friend of mine and I snuck in without paying. Very intimate venue, though. Young girl down in front kept begging Joni to do "Conversation," so at one point she stopped, explained that she didn't really remember that song because she wrote it so long ago, and "I was so much older then," (to which somebody -- I won't say whom -- in the peanut gallery shouted "Right on, Sister!" ). Then she said she'd do it if the girl would get on stage with her and sing it with her.

Great moment, I doubt things like that would happen often in concerts today.
