(131,081 posts)And it's obvious what they are when you see them. I tasted one on a dare, but even if I hadn't known what it was I'd have hated it. There wasn't much flavor but texture was really nasty, kind of like overcooked liver held together with wood glue.

(6,436 posts)Loved it back when I lived with someone back in the 80s who knew how to make it. Wed buy blocks of frozen squid at our local grocery store in Ohio and clean them, saving the ink sacs. Not something I can buy anymore.

(4,582 posts)(and maybe a bit later if I recall my history correctly). It was the tounges of larks in jelly (think of those weird jello dishes from the 1950's). It was basically a conspicuous consumption type of dish, showing off how wealthy you were. Sort of like the different birds inside each other (turducken ain't a new idea, lol). As far as I know, it had fallen out of favor by the end of the Victorian era.

Was considered a delicacy.
I'm not a fan of gelatinous food, so what is in the aspic barely matters. Panna cotta is one of the only foods that use gelatin I'll eat.
The lark dishes were considered a sign of decadence by the idle rich in Europe.

immediately refuse to accept or go out the back door in an hour or so.
The oatmeal was fine and the milk was OK but they used to serve a 3 egg product
square with some velvety type of cheese on it along with sweet canned fruit in jello.
I would drink the milk, ate some of the toast, and drank the juice. And I love coffee but
theirs was decaf and tasted liked it was brewed with a dirty sock. Door dash, my
son, and my debit card got me through.
Btw getting an Apple tablet and getting back on DU was life saver.

(11,259 posts)My one and ONLY experience with escargot was in a 5-star restaurant in Las Vegas back in 1997. My wife and I went to Vegas on an anniversary trip and went to dinner at one of the fancy places off the strip. I spit it out into my napkin and downed my drink, my water and a second drink afterward! Disgusting is underselling the experience for me!
Tofu is just bland and texture-lacking to me...the spongy-ness of it is sort of off putting...
I do like bacon-wrapped smoked oysters though...just won't see me sucking them off the half-shell though! Slimy and nasty!

(3,049 posts)and raw oysters. Years ago, I worked in a restaurant that began adding different menu items every couple of months or so.
They would have meetings so we could taste the new items and could better describe them to the clientele. I liked every single thing except the raw oysters. I had one and never again.
I also don't like peas but if they're in a soup or pot pie or stew, they don't bother me. I do like snap peas though. Go figure.

they put a warning on them , to not eat raw. But they still sold them . The taste is like eating a raw egg with a salty taste.

I swore Id be part of breaking the cycle with my daughter but every damned foodie restaurant here has their take on it and she likes them.
The honest truth is that every recipe has one goal - make them not taste like brussel sprouts. You could do what some recipes do to a shoe in an effort to make them edible.

(3,049 posts)I have absolutely no intention of finding out. Someone once told me to brush them with olive oil and salt and roast them in the oven. Like hell I will. No Brussel sprouts in my house ever!!! I don't even like seeing them in the store.

They wrap bacon around water chestnuts and chicken liver and call it Rumaki. I don't care what they call it - it's still liver and it's still nasty.

Means I can't eat anything Mexican, or Indian.
Sadly at this age there's a lot of other things I can't eat either, but those are the absolute worst.

From Google - Uni sushi is a Japanese dish made from the gonads of sea urchins. It's a delicacy that's often eaten raw as nigiri sushi or sashimi. Uni has a creamy texture, light, sweet, and briny flavor, and is sometimes served with a raw quail egg.
The uni I had was absolutely horrible - it not only tasted awful, but also felt furry in my mouth. I'm told maybe it wasn't as fresh as it should have been. I've never been brave enough to try again.

(6,686 posts)with friends a number of years ago. They loved the stuff, so we let them order. Soon plates of complete (head, tail, everything) critters show up. Our friends proceeded to happily dissect and eat the offerings, but we were a bit, ah, creeped out. We managed to eat some of it, but let's say we were still hungry when we left.
I've eaten lobster, crab, softshell crab, cornish game hens, oysters, escargot, chicken wings, and lots of other things, but those plates of complete critters were like something out of a horror movie.
More recently, one of the dishes at a pot-luck lunch was crayfish. The lady across from me disassembled one and ate it, but I had to pass.

When I got home it tried and and almost threw-up vomited when I saw the currant filling. The currant berries were crushed where I took a bite and the berries looked like dead files. I never ate another currant filled doughnut again.

(9,067 posts)I ordered it in a popular local restaurant, and it had a warning on the menu. I shrugged that off and ordered it. It was so spicy I could only eat a spoonful or two and was in serious pain. I went home hungry.
I'm actually something of a chili head now so I can't say I wouldn't try it again. Building up your heat tolerance takes time.
As for foods I wouldn't try again I'll go with Brussels sprouts.

(23,747 posts)However, we ate anchovies and sardines in Spain which were very fresh and cooked just like any other fish. They were quite good. However we could not get past the octopus rings chewy and strange but they did look like onion rings.
Brains and eggs. In Evansville Indiana there is a huge fall festival with all kinds of food from little booths and the most popular booth was the fried brain sandwiches. (the festival is actually an amazing fundraiser for lots of little groups like highschool bands, etc.) However the brain sandwiches looked like a chicken fried steak sandwich.
Pretty much all organ meat except really fresh calves or veal liver.
I have never tried menudo or tripe and never will.
Is Durian the fruit that is also called the Rotten Fruit because it smells so bad. SOmewhere out on the internet there is a video of cats being offered Durian. All of them react badly to it but the funniest is the one that tries to bury it

(61,336 posts)cook. As soon as I came home the smell of the liver and onions would make me sick. She would put a guilt trip on me that the liver would make me better health wise. I never knew if it was onions or the liver that made me sick. But it did.I still can recall the smell.
