Then that's it for me. I think I'm going to be homeless. I won't be homeless. I'm watching mark omalley on msnbc.
I'm not going to be homeless. I'll whack myself. I'm not letting them win.
Why aren't Americans in the streets?

(19,941 posts)My husband is disabled and I've been worried as well. Though we could scrape by in an emergency situation, I hope that's not necessary for anyone.

(476 posts)They may interrupt some payments to gauge the reaction
of the country to it. It would take legislation to permanently
lower any payments.

Seniors already freeze / starve to death in this country, their numbers will just be multiplied

(15,728 posts)Their lives were hell. They were chronically ill. No one wanted them around. They started camping in front of the library that upset tourists and the ptb and they were rousted. Its dangerous for women.
Many torn to drugs to cope. They smell. Their treated like they have the plague. I'm not living that.

(2,679 posts)The fascist right wants Americans to panic.
And as correctly noted: only Congress has the authority to terminate retirement and disability benefits.
The concern is disruption of payments partial or late payments.

(16,184 posts)create fear and chaos. Thats how they destroy us and try to control us. Cut off SS for a period of time, then bring it back, but we get less I would guess. They are just trying to destroy our economy and our country! I would like to say something else, but dont want to get kicked off du.

(15,728 posts)I got last months ok. But I'm hearing abt disruption in 30-60 days. That's going to be a problem for me. And i suspect millions

(61,776 posts)Even the personnel cuts will probably hit customer service far more than distribution. If you need to call the office or contact them in any way, I'd expect increased delays and dropped call, for sure.

(8,208 posts)Or anybody requiring to interact with staff from the social security. Your payments are on autopilot and unlikely to be affected.
Of course people trying to get disability or apply anew may be in trouble .

(1,115 posts)I too have been living in a state of fear. I am disabled also and I'm getting by on a tiny monthly check and a housing voucher. Without my social security I will be living (actually dying) on the street. You and everyone else in our situation will be in my prayers.

(7,707 posts)There are rumors that the company that my hubby works for may cease operations in the US over the summer. That will end us for sure. We will never be able to afford to live anywhere. We will be homeless and that will destroy us both. I cannot live on the streets with my health and he has never even considered such a prospect before.
Guess it is time to start hoarding pain pills for the inevitable. That and get some sleeping pills.

(15,728 posts)I know how you feel. I've spent $2700 on my teeth last month. Even with merdicare one bill was $275 for basically nothing.
Take care of your health. I can't believe all that's happened in 40 days. I don't understand. Keeping you and Rich in my prayers.

(2,781 posts)Are you currently homeless or at risk of becoming homeless?
This program is designed to prevent homelessness by providing temporary rental and/or utility assistance for eligible low income individuals and families who are currently homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless.

IMO, better to prepare now rather than wait until a crisis happens.
But with 8.7 million people on SSDI, it would be a major major national crisis. I don't think it will happen.
Very kind. I'm worried they'll kick disabled like me off. I'm almost 60
