The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm new here and made enough posts that I can start a discussion.
I follow climate issues primarily and hope to share them here with you. I will be honest and say that I do not believe that we will be able to survive the crisis. There are plenty who disagree with me, and that is perfectly fine; we all need to deal with catastrophic news in our own way, whether it is climate breakdown or Donald Trump robbing us of another four years of geologic time that we need desperately to prevent the worst impacts that are bearing down on us.
I have seen news that all the top scientists in this field and others will be fired. One already has Zack Labe, a sea ice expert previously employed by NASA, on the climate front.
I tend not to opine on the topic I write about, just the facts that scientists reveal in studies and social media posts, as most media does not cover the subject at all, and I make the mistake of assuming folks know what I talk about. It is a complicated science, and I am not a scientist, but that has the benefit of making the topic less technical and easier to understand for readers. Have you ever read a scientific journal? Whoa!
So, thank you again for the opportunity to shatter the secrecy of what is occurring to the biosphere due to greenhouse gas emissions. It is worse than what we are being told.
Best,
William

(68,639 posts)They refuse to pay for expensive prevention and damage repair.
It will all fall on regular citizens.
And it is one reason the politicians and billionaires are grabbing as much
resources, gold, cash as possible right now. They want to steal it all before the shit hits the fan.
They think they can buy expensive hidey holes or even go off planet and trash a new planet for personal gain.
Think. Again.
(22,330 posts)...they know somehow that it IS already past the point of no return and that's why they aren't trying to save the only known life in the universe (that we know of).

(68,639 posts)They have known this for a long time.
They are mentally ill, greedy SOBs addicted to wealth.
But they are not stupid.
They are trying to save their own skins.
They see themselves as entitled, special and the only ones worth saving.

(22,330 posts)I started on DU with the intention of spreading awareness and building strong public support for the transition away from CO2 energy of every kind, following Joe Biden's lead.
I ran into a LOT of hardcore push back, (mostly silly fossil fuel industry talking points though) and seemingly little interest in the environment and energy forum, and then during the run up to election, when Dems didn't seem to want to amplify Biden's Green agenda, I thought maybe the Clean Energy message wasn't the right thing to push at the time, we might just be preaching to the choir and maybe messing with the Dem election efforts.
With trump back, I don't know what to think (about anything, really). But I do know that the transition is still going strong, just not here in the U.S., and I'm still unsure how much of an impact trying to restart the Clean Energy movement excitement would make at this point.
That being said, I'm very much looking forward to your posts! Maybe I need a little hope and renewed excitement about it all myself!

(9,120 posts)It is obvious that we will ignore it until probably too late to do anything about it. I live in a rural area of Texas and over the last 37 years that I have lived here the changes are dramatic.
In '87, the average days over 100° were 27, now it is not uncommon for us to top 90. The dramatic loss of birds in very noticeable, and trees are dying from drought/freeze at unprecedented rates. The air is not clean even in the country and water is getting scarcer and scarcer.
The real shame of it all is we have the ability to do something about it - but not the political will. Instead, we focus on meaningless things like culture and class issues. Our elected representatives seem to be afraid to speak out about anything meaningful these days.

I believe it is the single most important thing we face, and I have started instinctively shielding my eyes as our situation unfolds.
Time to go find some insects to stare at outside.
