OT- by the way I played with someone in their late 70's. I think I was in my mid 30s. He could only 'bomb' it 175 or 200. always middle of fairway and man could he putt.
Kicked my ass.
Don't underestimate the aged golfer. Well at least don't bet with them if you don't know them. That was an expensive learning curve.

(28,827 posts)He made me play from the regular tees and I let him tee off from places where he could reach the green with his 9 wood. I am struggling to reach par 4's with my 3 wood. He beat me about half the time and I thought I was pretty good. Yes, he could chip and putt.
When he was 87 and I was 73 we played in our club's biggest tournament of the year, we were partners. The 1st 9 holes was a 2 man scramble, it decides what flight your team is slotted in. After 5 or 6 holes he looks at me and says, hey, we're playing too good they are going to put us in the championship bracket. I tell him, you start playing bad. Sure enough we get put in the top bracket.
The 2nd 9 holes is better ball where they take the best score from the 2 of us. The final 9 holes is alternate shot. We are doing fine but the 2 youngsters playing with us were really lighting it up, made 6 birdies in a row at one stretch. We only have about 3 holes left and I have a 3rd shot to a par 4. My buddy short sided me and I was in some grass we call frog hair. I try this Tiger Wood's flop shot to be a hero and cold shank it and almost hit my buddy. The look on his face, he was about to cry. I luckily had a mulligan I didn't use, so I take my putter grip and swing back and forth like a putt just to get it on the green and kept my head down and then I heard people yelling, I holed it.
We didn't think we won anything when they were giving out the prizes but when they called our names for 2nd place the look on my buddy's eyes I will remember forever. The prize money was cash, so I say, go up and get it.
Best tournament I ever finished 2nd in.
