Favorite California lakes that aren't Tahoe. - sfgate

Convict Lake 😍

With its picturesque mountain backdrop, vivid turquoise water and a border of aspens that turn a beautiful yellow in the fall, you might be wondering how this lovely lake got such a foreboding name. In 1871, a group of nearly 30 inmates escaped a Nevada prison and were cornered at this lake; most were captured, though the sheriff leading the pursuit died in a shootout. Named after that showdown, Convict Lake is perfect for boating (electric motors only) and swimming, as well as trout fishing. Lodging includes Convict Lake Resort (which has boat rentals, parking and a marina) and a campground near the water.

Lake Tahoe provides an iconic California lake experience: waterside restaurants, boating and beaches, with plenty of places to swim and wade. It’s perhaps so iconic that it has become too crowded and chaotic for visitors to fully enjoy a day at the lake. Plus, the long drive through the mountains to Lake Tahoe on the weekends is no joke.

We’ve compiled a list of 15 lakes worth visiting — five in each region of California — so those tired of the crowds and the drive can find a new favorite retreat, perhaps a little closer to home. Whether they feature unique attractions like the original London Bridge or a restaurant with the “most beautiful hamburger” on the planet, these lakes not only offer the classic experience you would find in Tahoe — swimming, camping, hiking and boating — but also have a little something special for a day to remember.

All except Rae Lakes are familiar and I've visited most with Lake Arrowhead where I've spent much time.
