I grew up with him in my teens, very late 70's and on.
He was a social folk hero to a lot of kids back before everyone knew the con that wrestling is, right down to eating your vitamins etc...
RIP.

(39,721 posts)My wife and I were staying in a moderately upscale Los Angeles area hotel and the shower in our room wasn't draining properly. My wife called the front desk but nobody was answering so I went downstairs to see why not.
Hulk Hogan was in the lobby with a large entourage. Many other people were jostling one another for a chance to get his autograph. His assistants were discouraging photographs.
Hogan himself looked a little irritated.
It was a complete circus and the desk staff were all busy with that, so I just went back upstairs and we suffered the slow draining shower.
So yeah, I guess he was a big deal.

(210 posts)against King Kong Bundy in an epic steel cage match way back when. I think Hogan was actually hurt for real because King Kong Bundy kept looking back as he slooooooowly crawled to the edge of the ring. Hogan recovered to get back on script and pulled Bundy off the cage. They battled some more and with Bundy finally incapacitated, Hogan climbed the steel cage and I tell you, when Hogan jumped down and landed on the side of the ring, fifteeen thousand of us jumped out of our seats and blew the roof off of the old LA Sports Arena.

To a kid back then, as a kid, he was revered.
