(3,830 posts)blowing on me, no matter the temperature. I like it best when my cats are sleeping on top of me, but neither of them usually spends all night on me. I have sleep apnea so I sleep on the chaise longue with the head up 30° and it is the best sleep I've had in decades.

(2,037 posts)Or just a plain ol fan??? I do have a ceiling fan that I just realized I have on most every night
not the light, just the fan.
No cats, tho
when I visit my daughter, her two cats join me. Howie sleeps at my head + Greta sleeps at my feet. I wonder who they bug when Im not there???
markodochartaigh
(3,830 posts)it's an oscillating floor fan. I'm thinking of treating myself for my birthday and getting another one so I can have two blowing at the same time. I like ceiling fans too, I just don't have one in this room. I imagine that the cats miss you when you aren't there.

(111,219 posts)that circulate it quite well--even my dog can get comfortable then. If it is 79 or below outdoors (usually very late in the evening) then I open the window. (Those of you in humid areas might find that too hot, but it is semi-arid here in Colorado. If I were living in the humid South, I can assure you that I would have to have it lower than 78-79°F. I keep one insulated blackout curtain on the west-facing window, but just a blind and sheer on the smaller south-east facing window (neither my dog nor I like total cave-like conditions and need a little light in the early morning and late afternoon). I find that central A/C is not only expensive, but headache and lethargy-inducing for me so that is my big issue. Until it gets above 90F, I typically will rely on an evaporative cooler (portable "swamp cooler" ) in the bedroom--along with the two fans. But, at some point it becomes too hot for that alone.
The one fan next to me is positioned so that only the corner blows on me--comfortable, but not blowing hair in my face. Sheets are bamboo/eucalyptus (tencel), and I only use white vinegar in Downey balls and wool balls in the dryer so as to keep them soft, but not overly fragranced (just a bit from the detergent residue). And I sleep in COTTON (t-shirt). I HATE non-natural (e.g., polyester) fabrics in the summertime--no matter how supposedly "wicking" they might be.
Oh, and most important--my aging girlie dog is comfortably sleeping at my feet. I know I will eventually lose her someday--that will be an excruciating adjustment. sigh...
Gee, I guess I really am picky. LOL

(2,037 posts)Seems like youve determined a splendid sleep strategy
Ive looked at bamboo sheets but wasnt sure I would like them
Are the Downy / vinegar balls for the washer??? I use wool balls in the dryer + my Egyptian cotton sheets are soooo soft
But theyre old, as am I, + will need to be replaced
Our old rescue passed over yesterday
She had been sleeping beside the bed the last few weeks
Shes missed this morning.
Hank, the Aussie, likes to sleep in the bedroom doorway. A good viewing spot w/ good air movement
Dark, cool, comfortable + quiet w/ a furry companion
Seems like a good recipe for a good nights sleep

(111,219 posts)I really stay on treating her osteoarthritis, though, with all safe means available. Probably better than I do my own. (!)
Yes. The Downey balls (still available, I think, at Walmart or some other places on the same shelf with the liquid Downey) are used with straight vinegar in the washer--to the same mark as you would for Downey. That and the wool balls in the dryer do a great job with fabric softening/anti-static cling, etc.
The tencel (either bamboo or eucalyptus) is really breathable, so these sheets are considerably cooler in summer. Amazon has some that are put on special from time to time that are of reasonable quality.
I worked overseas for years, and the sound of BBC broadcasts on a shortwave in non-English-speaking countries was the way I could get to sleep. So, I will often fall asleep with that on (internet streaming) to this day.
Final ingredient (for me, at least): 5 mg melatonin. My sister swears it doesn't work for her, but it sure does for me.
Sweet dreams!

Thanks for the tips... I'll be checking them out soon... Cheers!!!

If your flamelike eyes
Melt my soul
I will be ice
While burning inside
I will be ice
While burning inside
Your Voice is a cliff
If it calls me
I'll be a bird + fly
While burning inside
I'll be a bird + fly
While burning inside
Your love became a fire in me
My heart is insane
Became more insane with you
Because of the wind in your hair
While flying my heart
I go migrate
From this land
I go migrate
From this land
Whom do my hands touch
Whom do my eyes see
If death comes across me
I choose you
If death comes across me
I choose you
Your love became a fire in me
My heart is insane
Became more insane with you
Your love became a fire in me
My heart is insane
Became more insane with you

(6,566 posts)I recalled the time when, as a young girl about 10, I went over to a friend's house after school, and they had a "hired woman" ironing bedsheets on a special machine. It was an eye-opening moment for me that (1) people ironed sheets, (2) that there was a special machine just for that, and (3) they actually hired someone to do it.

When I would go to stay with my grandparents in the summer, my grandmother would
"mangle" sheets for the cabins my grandparents opened for the summer folk... Sheets
+ pillow casea... Table linens... We kids took off the dust covers, swept the floors +
washed windows... Every summer... for "cabins" along the shore of Lake Michigan...
Wow... What memories...

(6,566 posts)I grew up on a farm, and Mom hung our sheets on the line outdoors to dry. The wind pretty much shook any wrinkles out of them and the smell of fresh sheets off the line was heavenly....

(832 posts)As part of my duties in Medical Supply, I had to inspect the company that laundered our linens (sheets, pillow cases, scrubs, etc.). For sheets, they took them out of the giant dryer slightly damp and ran them through a machine with a huge, heated drum to finish drying them. When the sheets came off the drum another machine took them, folded them, and wrapped them in bundles.
I've always found how things are done interesting. I like watching reruns of the program "How It's Made" which shows how products are made. I'm amazed at the imagination the engineers have to design machines to do things.

(2,037 posts)How amazingly clever... I loved watching "How It's Made"...
I remember Spring when I lived in Turkey... folks would bring their (wool) rugs out to the street. They would spray them w/ hoses,
sprinkle them w/ soap flakes + the children would skate on the soap suds like iceskating... I don't know if this was done everywhere,
but in the afternoon the soap suds were washed away + the men worked to hang the wet rugs outside to dry... In a few days, the rugs
were all taken inside as Spring cleaning progressed...

(1,176 posts)I have a neighbor dog that usually wakes me up very early every morning. It likes to bark a lot at nothing.
I bought a bed about 10 years ago that has a massage function. I crawl in, start up the Kindle and read a chapter or two with the massage thing going and it's basically sandman time by then. At least until the dog starts. I love dogs in general. Just not that one. Even then I know it's the human's fault for not training it. But still. So how do you cover your ears?
ultralite001
(2,037 posts)Most nights I wrap my head + ears in a soft afghan crocheted by my son... I can pull it down over my eyes if I
need the room to be darker. I can drape it over my neck, back + arms if I'm catching up on my reading...
I tried a night cap but it was simply too hot.
If I'm on a music or podcst binge, I have some soft, fleecy Acoutic Sheep wireless headphones. They have ambient
noise + sleep hygiene streams. Once I get comfortable, I'm asleep in no time... They also work w/ the TV...

He slept with a gallon jug of "Rid-A-Bug" next to his bed. It had a 10-foot sprayer
(maybe not quite that far)... He swore he could hear them in the dark... He'd flip
on the light + be ready w/ the spray...
He abandoned that habit when we moved to California...

(2,298 posts)..Well..kinda speaking..
Strange thing about roaches. If they land on you, they'll get off and fly somewhere else to lick their legs and stuff.
Why do they do that?.....They actually don't like the smell of humans.
Yeah...strange things.

(81 posts)I have several fans on high all aimed at the bed, doesn't matter what season it is. I just pile more blankets on in the winter. My partner is very understanding. I need the noise and the feeling of wind on me to sleep.

(832 posts)I have an 8", portable, rechargeable oscillating fan with remote control on my dresser. It has four speeds so depending upon how warm it is I can adjust the air flow. Actually, I have two of these fans and I took on to Las Vegas this week. I don't care much for air conditioning and it was set to 74 degrees in the room so the fan helped keep me cool. The fan, at low speed makes little noise and even at a higher speed it's more like white noise.
