Maine bill banning medical debt from credit reports held to governor's desk

More protection for Mainers with medical debt is one signature away from becoming law in Maine.

The Maine Senate sent a bill to Governor Janet Mills this week that bans medical debt from showing up on credit reports.

The bill passed unanimously.

Supporters say one out of four Maine families owe $5,000 or more in medical debt, which can drag down credit scores and stand in the way of lending for things like car loans or mortgages.

Great news! Medical bills are too arbitrary to be a part of credit reports.
