John Denver and Mama Cass singing "Leaving On A Jet Plane" and trying to get out the vote!

This was the pilot episode of The Midnight Special, which aired on August 19, 1972. It became a regular series in 1973.

The pilot was presented in an effort to get young people to vote in the upcoming elections.

John Denver and Mama Cass were trying to get out the vote because now Americans could vote at age 18 (she discusses her efforts in this video). Less than two years later, she was dead.

Then they sang John's song (which he wrote but was made famous by Peter, Paul, and Mary) "Leaving on a Jet Plane" with great harmonizing.

There are some absolutely wonderful and touching comments underneath the video. This song meant so much to so many people.

That is the most beautiful duet I have ever heard! John's chiming 12-string is the perfect accompaniment, and their voices complement each other in perfect harmony. I always thought Mama Cass was so beautiful, especially when she sang.
