On our Rochester NY radio station, they were sometimes called The Beatlebockers because it sounded like a Beatles record

Take the vocals out and slow it a bit and it might have a live set Beatles,

Except for the short guitar solo which isn't like something George would play, everything about it screams "Let's sound like The Beatles".
The B-Section of the verses were one of the inspirations to the song "That Thing You Do". Listening to this song, the similarly is pretty clear.
