Last year, Sheriff spent 30 minutes explaining to a mom that her 14 year old son could not legally ride an ebike.

She continued to let him ride. A man died

Spitzer says his office has charged 50-year-old Tommi Jo Mejer with one felony count of child endangerment, one felony count of accessory after the fact to a crime, one misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, one misdemeanor count of loaning a motor vehicle to an unlicensed driver and one misdemeanor count of providing false information to a peace officer. She was arrested on Tuesday.

It could go up to 60 mph with that particular model, and it could go from like 35 mph in two to three seconds," Spitzer said.

Investigators say Mejer was warned by sheriff's deputies about letting her son illegally ride the e-motorcycle in June of last year.

Mejer reportedly called the sheriff's department, complaining that a neighbor was posting pictures of her son riding an e-motorcycle, saying he was out of control.

The sheriff's department says it spent nearly 30 minutes explaining to her that her son could not legally ride the e-motorcycle, and that she would face criminal charges if she continued to let him.

• Ed Ashman, an 81-year-old retired Marine Corps captain and substitute teacher, has passed away following a hit-and-run collision involving a 14-year-old on an electric motorcycle.
• The suspect’s mother, Tommi Jo Mejer, faces multiple felony charges after allegedly ignoring police warnings and initially lying to investigators about owning the high-powered vehicle.
• Authorities have not yet specified if the teen's charges will be upgraded following Ashman's death, though District Attorney Todd Spitzer has vowed to hold parents strictly accountable for such "loaded weapons."
The collision happened on April 16 near the intersection of Toledo Way and Ridge Route Drive by El Toro High School, where Ashman was a substitute teacher.

According to police, Ashman was crossing the street when a 14-year-old boy, performing wheelies on a Surron Ultra Bee e-motorcycle, struck him and took off.

The vehicle, which can reach speeds of 58 mph, was operated without the required license, registration, or insurance.

Tommi Jo Mejer, the boy’s mother, was arrested and charged with felony child endangerment and accessory after the fact.

Still caused a lot of injuries (to myself) - because I was 14 years old and stupid.

Here, we went from mandatory helmet laws for any bicycle or motorcycle use to no helmet required if electric and widespread recreational use of high powered unlicensed e-bikes by individuals of all ages. It seems to have started with rentable e-bikes and e-scooters. Local leaders looked the other way when companies placed motorized transportation devices around town without requiring a helmet rental system. They eventually repealed the helmet it law as it was rarely enforced and when enforced it was seemingly applied discriminatorily. I’m not concerned enough to monitor all changes in the law, but once we looked the other way on e-bikes, I now see more actual dirt bikes and over powered e-bikes (not enduros or dual-sports) on the road today. In my opinion, all three branches of our government are often so slow to react to either technological advances or new ways of commerce that the burgeoning industries have outsized influence on their own regulation. I’m looking at you gig apps, peer to peer commerce, and tech assisted dynamic and personal pricing trends).

The gig economy is a nuisance and municipalities won't deal with it. Airbnb has taken away housing stock and driven up rents - people still use them. Uber and Lyft have destroyed the taxi business in lots of places. People still use them. Scooters and eBikes are a scourge to pedestrians. Cities won't do a thing because they are popular.

Sadly, it appears her son, has learned much from his mother about lack of responsibility. He will likely pay dearly for that.

A reasonable guess, but the story doesn’t mention remorse by the 14 year old.

To paraphrase myself, the son appears to be much like his mother.

protected by the law.

Yeah, I get it. I don't know the whole story.

But hey, doesn't feel just so warm and fuzzy knowing that the dirtbag billionaires in the Epstein files AREN'T BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE? They are protected BY the law, it seems, but are NOT held accountable...

A felony?

Sheeeeeit.

She had been previously warned he wasn't permitted to ride it and continued to allow it. The son was driving recklessly, hit and killed a pedestrian before fleeing the scene, and then the mother denied it was theirs.

She deserves a jail term and a hefty civil judgement

The shit I've seen would blow your mind. People on tractors tearing around blind corners at top speed; a couple of idiots on Razor scooters blazing through daily on my shift alone; even a pair of horseplaying mechanics--one on a bicycle, one following him too closely on a tractor--racing through an intersection. Once every few years we lose someone because they drove around with a leg hanging out of a tractor or sat with their butt half off the seat. One clown managed to flip a tractor down a stairwell. I like to tell myself I'm safety-conscious, yet I've still had close calls (and done a few stupid things) myself, but this sheer disregard for ourselves and others flabbergasts me.

It looks pretty high performance with a hefty price tag in the $5000-$6000 range. A 14 year old has no business being out on the street on something like that. The mother is going to be in some real trouble now that Mr. Ashman has died.

RIP USMC Capt. (Ret.) Ed Ashman

I nearly hit one of these sidewalk terrorists. I'm turning right checking all around and started my turn.
BRAKES SLAM! I didn't see these rat bastards zipping down the corner cutout. Parked cars, buses, and pedestrians we expect. 30+ on a sidewalk gives me a pass if I hit you.

When I rode a 750 Kawasaki I considered myself invisible.
Kids today think it's invincible. That and a bad attitude!
Does this kid even care he killed a Marine?
