Residents across the D.C. region may be going to sleep Monday night to the sounds of thunder and heavy rain, as a strong line of storms is set to sweep across the area before midnight.

The National Weather Service has the majority of D.C. and Maryland under a hazardous weather outlook but has implemented a severe thunderstorm watch until 1 a.m. Tuesday for Central-Northern Virginia.

An estimated 2.4 million people across Virginia, including Fauquier, Prince William, Spotsylvania and Culpeper counties, are expected to see hail measuring up to 2 inches and scattered gusts potentially reaching 70 mph.
