A Democrat wanted to require all businesses to use E-Verify, but Republican senators ruled it out of order. As Gov. Ron DeSantis and state lawmakers weighed how to respond to President Donald Trumps immigration orders, they considered everything from mandatory death penalties for migrants who are in the country illegally to barring them from receiving in-state college tuition.
Theres one topic that was off the table, though: Going after the companies hiring them.
In bills passed by the Legislature and signed by DeSantis on Thursday, state lawmakers arent requiring more companies to screen workers through E-Verify, the federal database that confirms an employees citizenship status. They arent assigning more resources to enforce it and arent increasing penalties for companies who violate it.
Democrats seized on the omission this week, saying it runs counter to claims by DeSantis and Republican leaders that they were passing the toughest immigration laws in the nation.
Youre not a serious person, politician or public servant if you are not recognizing, identifying and doing something about employment, Sen. Jason Pizzo, D-Miami, said Wednesday.

Who would work in the fields and factories at slave wages? The rich throughout history have made their money on the backs of the down trodden and poor...
Their "perfect" employee is the slave. Work them till they drop dead and get another to take their place..
It makes me sick and I think we are headed for this outcome.
Ok, rant mode off...

(17 posts)That every business hiring decision must be accompanied by an e-verified I-9 form. The system is not perfect and will return false negatives as well as positives. If an employee is determined to not have passed the verification it is within the law to ask them for further documentation. Employees who cannot pass further testing can and should be reported to ICE.
Now, what about employers who fail to verify the employee's right to work in the U.S. but fail to report those who do not pass the verification?
First offense: Warning

Third offense: Misdemeanor conviction of the president or CEO for not following the law
