DARIEN, IL Downers Grove Township Democrats broke the Republican stranglehold on township offices in Tuesday's election.
It was the same GOP-controlled township that stayed publicly silent last year when a township trustee accused African American children of attacking whites in schools.
In the race for supervisor, Democrat Kim Savage defeated Republican incumbent Paul Coultrap with 59 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results.
The four-member township board of trustees is changing to all-Democrat, from all-Republican. Democrats Michelle Moreno, Karol Sole, Richard Friel and Kevin Szczerba prevailed with wide margins over Republicans Theresa McClear, Dave Ricordati, Philip Painter and Lorraine Grimsby. (McClear and Ricordati are incumbents.)

(108 posts)I've been living here for 40 years and it's always been GOP. A writer on local politics said the township has been GOP since Lincoln! Don't know if that's true. Various hate groups have been attacking our institutions and so far they have been kept out by some local progressive groups. Our Village Council now has 2 more progressive members. We've been getting an influx of families from Chicago (in fact the whole of DuPage County) and along with that demographic a changing political population. It's great!

(91 posts)Hi - Would you do a small favor and use the proper word "Democratic?"
The way your post uses "Democrat" instead - this was invented by Republican consultants so that the word sounded like "rat."
The board is changing to all-Democratic.
Thanks.
