Dubuque schools poised to call for bond election, confirm closure of Jefferson regardless of outcome

Dubuque Community School Board members are poised to vote next week to place a $70 million general obligation bond on this fall’s ballots.

The board is expected Monday to officially adopt a resolution ordering an election on the bond issuance for the Nov. 4 election.

If approved by at least 60% of district voters, the $70 million bond would be combined with $51.9 million in borrowing against future revenues from the district’s 1-cent sales tax, or SAVE fund to pay for a new $121.9 million middle school at the site of Washington Middle School.

Jefferson Middle School would then be closed, and the new middle school would operate as a feeder school to one of the district’s two high schools along with Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School.
