Voters back incumbents in April 5 town election
UPDATED, April 5: With just 16.25 percent of Arlington's registered voters turning out for the spring election, the three townwide officeholders who faced challenges will keep their seats.
For the School Committee's two spots on the ballot, first-time candidate Dmitry Missiuro Vaslyev, who mounted a campaign centered on the Arlington Public Schools math curriculum, received 1,421 votes, while incumbents Leonard J. Kardon got 3,550, and Kirsi C. Allison-Ampe tallied 3,798 votes. School Committee members serve three-year terms.
In the only other contested townwide race, Arlington Housing Authority Commissioner Jo Anne Preston received 3,382 votes to keep her seat over Timothy James O'Leary (857) and Michael D. Garrigan (335). Preston will serve a five-year term. AHA's properties are not owned or governed by the town or its officials. and operate under state regulations. All AHA properties are owned and administered by a board of commissioners, three of whom are chosen by Arlington voters, one who is appointed by the Select Board, and one who is appointed by the governor.
A total of 5,222 of the 32,129 registered voters cast ballots in the Saturday, April 5, election that had polls open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the unofficial results provided by Town Clerk Juli Brazile. The numbers reflect the absentee and early voting ballots. (For the town's April 6, 2024, election, 5,074 voters of the 32,462 registered voters or 15.63 percent cast ballots, according to town records.) As regularly happens, Saturday's turnout for the town election is a fraction of the turnout for the Nov. 5, 2024, presidential election, when 27,764 of the 33,504 voters cast a ballot either in person or through early voting, marking a 82.8 percent turnout.
