Group launches 'decline to sign' campaign against citizen-only voting measures
A digital ad campaign promoted by Common Cause Michigan is asking voters to reject citizen-only voting measures that, if enacted, could affect the voting rights of citizens.
The campaign targets two initiatives that aim to make proof of citizenship and other checks a requirement before registering to vote or casting a ballot. Ads for the effort are running statewide on digital platforms, but the campaign plans to move to in-person organizing and more direct advertising if needed.
One of the ballot initiative efforts is being led by state Rep. Bryan Posthumus (R-Rockford) through the Committee to Protect Voters Rights, while the other committee, Americans for Citizen Voting, is being backed by some segments of the Michigan Republican Party, including state Sen. Jim Runestad (R-White Lake), who is also serving as the partys chair.
Both initiatives have received approval from the Michigan Board of State Canvassers, and are eyeing the 2026 ballot.
