Pontiac mayoral candidate targeted for 2010 election fraud scheme
Pontiac A Pontiac mayoral candidate who was convicted of multiple counts in connection with an election fraud scheme in 2010 said he's learned from his mistakes, though some residents are questioning if he's the right person to lead the city.
Mike McGuinness, who is now president of the Pontiac City Council, is one of eight candidates running to become Pontiac's next mayor. Tim Greimel, the city's current mayor, is running as a Democrat for Michigan's 10th Congressional District.
In 2011, McGuinness was accused of fraudulently entering three Tea Party members' names as candidates for the Oakland County Board of Commissioners or the Michigan State Legislature in the November 2010 election.
McGuinness, who was chair of the Oakland County Democratic Party at the time, was convicted of multiple counts of uttering and publishing and perjury in connection with the scheme. He was sentenced to probation, 180 hours of community service and a $1,000 fine for his crimes, according to the Associated Press.
