Livonia voters reject $150M bond; Dearborn Heights mayoral hopefuls advance
By a two-to-one margin, voters in Livonia on Tuesday rejected a plan to borrow $150 million to build a new police station, library, city center plaza and renovate fire stations in the Wayne County suburb.
Nearly 67% of Livonia voters cast no votes against the bond issue in a campaign that drew organized opposition, while 33% voted in favor of the proposal. Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan said in a Wednesday statement that she respects the will of the voters, but noted the city still lacks the money needed to make vital repairs and upgrades to its key facilities.
Voters in seven Wayne County communities Detroit, Dearborn Heights, Flat Rock, Hamtramck, Livonia, Plymouth and Westland winnowed the number of candidates for their local city councils or commissions in Tuesday's primary.
In Dearborn Heights, a councilman finished first in Tuesday's primary to become the city's next mayor, followed by a fellow councilwoman as the second top vote-getter, according to unofficial results.
