Detroit City Council primaries produce surprises, key matchups, expert says

A progressive candidate and a state representative will face off in the District 7 Detroit City Council race in November, while a former councilman will try to take back the District 2 seat from its sitting councilwoman in two of this fall's highly competitive races.

In the Tuesday primary election, Progress Michigan Managing Director Denzel McCampbell finished first in the four-person District 7 race with 34.2% of the vote, followed by state Rep. Karen Whitsett with 33.6%, according to unofficial results. They will advance to the November election for the district on the far west side of Detroit.

McCampbell said he feels "great" about the results.

"At the beginning … we made it the goal to reach every part of the district, to be in every precinct, to knock doors, to make phone calls, to like be directly in front of voters," he said.
