89X returns to Detroit, Windsor airwaves after five-year absence

89X is back.

Windsor's long-running alt-rock station returned to the airwaves Thursday morning at CIMX-FM (88.7), following a teaser campaign that had been airing this week. The station had been playing country music since 89X was taken off the airwaves in November 2020, following a nearly 30-year run through the heyday of grunge and beyond.

The change took place at 8:08 a.m., the time that had been tipped during the rebranding campaign. The first song played was Jane's Addiction's "Stop," following a promo running down the station's history.

"It's time to make some noise again," the promo stated. "This time we're built in Windsor, for Windsor. This is the relaunch of a movement. This is the return of Windsor's loudest export. Welcome back to 89X. Let's make some noise together."
