Detroit mayoral candidates make bold promises in televised forum

Detroit mayoral candidate the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. said he has a plan that will enable 38,000 small businesses in the city to hire more workers, while opponent Mary Sheffield said she believes Detroit can be "the safest big city in America."

Just days before the Nov. 4 election in which voters decide who will be Detroit's next mayor, the candidates on the ballot made big promises on Monday night's "The Pulse," a local political talk show on Fox 2 Detroit. The two appeared separately on the show, answering questions from viewers for 15 minutes apiece.

Sheffield's comments about how Detroit can be the safest big U.S. city came in response to a viewer who supported having National Guard troops in Detroit and was dismissive of the impact of community groups in reducing neighborhood crime.

Detroit has seen dropping rates for some violent crimes, but it remains one of the nation's most violent big cities on a per-capita basis. The city's nearly 1,800 violent crimes per 100,000 people in 2024 were second to Memphis among cities with populations greater than 500,000 people.
