After narrow win in Hamtramck mayoral race, Alharbi sues competitor
Hamtramck's incoming mayor, Adam Alharbi, is suing his rival, Muhith Mahmood, who vowed to challenge his 11-vote loss in last week's election, contending Mahmood is not eligible to serve as mayor or run for the office.
In his lawsuit, Alharbi accused Mahmood of living outside of Hamtramck and therefore not meeting the residency requirements for holding the office. The city charter states mayoral candidates and office-holders must have been residents for at least one year at the time of filing to run for office.
"Hamtramck has become known for voter fraud. ... We have to start fighting it from now on," Alharbi told The Detroit News on Monday.
Alharbi filed the lawsuit against Mahmood and Hamtramck City Clerk Rana Faraj on Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court. Alharbi asked the court to declare that Mahmood cannot hold the office and to issue a temporary restraining order preventing Faraj from swearing in Mahmood until the case is resolved. The results remain uncertified.
