Frey wins a third term as Minneapolis mayor after second round of vote counts.

Mayor Jacob Frey beat back a challenge from democratic socialist Omar Fateh for a third term leading Minnesota’s largest city. He’ll still have to contend with a city council that’s to his left politically.

Frey survived by winning enough support in the second round of voting under the city’s ranked choice voting system. He hung on while his counterpart in St. Paul, outgoing Mayor Melvin Carter, lost in a historic upset to state Rep. Kaohly Her.

Her becomes the first woman and first Hmong-American to lead Minnesota’s capital city. Fateh had similarly hoped to become the first Somali-American and Muslim mayor of Minneapolis.

The county auditor (Hennepin County) determines property taxes, not the city. Ocelot II Nov 5 #4
Frey proposed raising property taxes by 7.8%, which I read yields an effective rate of 12% iemanja Nov 5 #5

He's not the greatest mayor, but he's not the worst. I'm not a fan, but at least he won't destroy the city. I wish he had better policies about homelessness, but c'est la vie. Overall a good election night.

Just what I always wanted. God forbid the city institute a wealth tax. Frey's backers wouldn't like that.

It was a point of discussion during the debates. Fateh said the money should be raised through a wealth tax because of the regressive nature of property taxes.

The city implements levies which go on top of the county's tax assessment. Frey's proposed a levy increase of 13%, but his staff got it down to 7.8%.

I can't find a reference to the 12% yielded rate. I know I read it somewhere, but since I can't find it now, I may be mistaken.
