Independent mayoral hopeful Andrew Cuomo said Monday its hypocrisy for his opponent, Democratic front-runner Zohran Mamdani, to maintain dual U.S.-Ugandan citizenship, citing the African nations anti-LGBTQ laws.
Why would you keep a citizenship in Uganda, which is a country that outlaws the LGBTQ community why? Why be a citizen of that country? Cuomo told reporters in Manhattan.
I believe in the LGBTQ community, and it would be a total act of hypocrisy to be a citizen of a country that abuses LGBTQ people, he continued. Its pure hypocrisy.
Cuomo brought up the issue of Mamdanis dual citizenship at a press conference held to highlight a New York Post report about how Mamdani, during a recent trip to his native Uganda, took a photo with Rebecca Kadaga, a local politician who in 2012 pushed to adopt a bill that made homosexuality punishable by life imprisonment.

And why I don't automatically dismiss someone, simply because they were born into Wealth.

The name was already very important in NY politics.
We should all have that sort of advantage.
LyfeTimeDem
(252 posts)Yeah he was born wealthy ...
But because of FDR I don't automatically dismiss because of it. Because like him Im a Regulated Capitalist...I am fine that Rich people exist...as long as there are the Guardrails FDR envisioned in place that ensures the Labor they rely on also get to live a high Quality of Life....FDR understood he was born lucky not superior.
Which stopped being the case when Reagan removed those guardrails...

LyfeTimeDem
(252 posts)Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt were fifth cousins. Their family lines split from a shared root back in the 1600s. The blood was old, a stronger, fresher tie bound them--Franklin married Anna Eleanor Roosevelt--She was Theodores niece, the daughter of his own dead brother, Elliott. This made the sitting President a direct part of Franklin's new life.
They certainly met, the most telling moment was the wedding in 1905. President Roosevelt had to give the bride away, he was the center of the day, not the groom. He clapped Franklin on the shoulder and boomed.
Well, Franklin theres nothing like keeping the name in the family. The young Democrat would follow the path the old Republican bull moose had carved.

(252 posts)It was shitting on a Democrat that was ridiculously dismissing the man as JUST that. Like when the MAGA try to reduce Harris as just a former girlfriend of Mayor Willie Brown, while dismissing her record post that.
Some may not be aware he was assistant to and Secretary of Hounsing and Urban Development all 8 yrs under Bill Clinton..
Cuomo won the 2010 Democratic primary for governor of New York and won the general election with over 60 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2014 and 2018. During his governorship, Cuomo signed legislation to legalize same-sex marriage and the recreational use of cannabis. His administration oversaw the construction of the Second Avenue Subway, the Moynihan Train Hall, and the reconstruction of the Tappan Zee Bridge and LaGuardia Airport.[1][2] He also decommissioned the Indian Point nuclear plant, which led to an uptick in greenhouse gas emissions.[3] In response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and the 2012 Webster shooting, Cuomo signed the NY SAFE Act of 2013, the strictest gun control law in the United States. He also delivered Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act; a 2011 tax law that raised taxes for the wealthy and lowered taxes for the middle class; a 12-week paid family leave law; and a gradual increase of the state's minimum wage to $15 per hour.
None of which should be *dismissed* as "just a nepo baby" on Democratic Underground of all places
SocialDemocrat61
(6,170 posts)Cuomo is running against the Democratic Party nominee. He was a sexual predator who had to resign in disgrace. He traded his father's name and reputation his entire life. He's a nepo baby and not a democrat anymore. He should be shit on. He a reprehensible human being.
LyfeTimeDem
(252 posts)He is not trading on his father's name now.......he is a Democrat and by the rules, not to be denigrated as "just a Nepo Baby" on Democratic Underground...that is all.
I guess if you also want to say RFK sr was one too....trading on the family name and his brothers record. I wouldn't reduce him to that, but apparently you would.
If Beau Biden had lived and run for Office would you have said "Nepo Baby" too??
If Chelsea Clinton runs for Office will SHE just be relegated to "Nepo Baby"?
Was Cecile Richards just a "Nepo Baby"??

(252 posts)be dismissed so cavalierly...he has legitimate personal achievements, Democrats should show him some respect for. Not dismissed out of hand simply because you prefer a different candidate ...
Born in Queens, New York City, Cuomo is a graduate of Fordham University and Albany Law School. He began his career working as the campaign manager for his father in the 1982 New York gubernatorial election. Later, Cuomo entered the private practice of law and chaired the New York City Homeless Commission from 1990 to 1993. Cuomo then served in the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development as assistant secretary from 1993 to 1997 and as secretary from 1997 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton. Cuomo was elected New York attorney general in 2006 after a failed bid to win the Democratic primary in the 2002 New York gubernatorial election.
Cuomo won the 2010 Democratic primary for governor of New York and won the general election with over 60 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2014 and 2018. To illustrate Democratic Socialist policies. Notably such that one of his staunchest supporters was NYC Republican Mayor -and Democratic Socialist, Fiorello LaGuardia who campaigned for FDR and incorporated FDR's policies into his work as mayor and vice versa. He was likely FDR's closest political ally.
Also I do not have FDR as my avatar -I think you confused me with the other person who is communicating with you

(1,870 posts)If you are a mayor of an American city but vote and hold citizenship and can potentially take benefits from an entirely different country, there becomes a credible question as to the priorities you have while in your position.
Doesn't just go for elected office btw. It is a standard practice to treat all dual citizenship as a potential conflict of interest for most civilian and military government roles.
