Cuomo wins controversial endorsement
Independent candidate Andrew Cuomo Thursday received the endorsement of Rev. Ruben Diaz Sr., a former city councilmember with a history of homophobic remarks, after slamming Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani for his own association with an anti-LGBTQ figure.
Diaz opposes gay marriage and in 2019 said the homosexual community controlled the City Council. Asked about Diazs stance, Cuomo framed it as a religious issue that doesnt preclude him from working with Diaz.
He does not support the concept, Cuomo said of Diazs opposition to gay marriage. Neither does the Catholic Church. Neither do a lot of, still to this day, many religious leaders, even though its the law of the land. He was vociferous in his opposition, we had many arguments about it.
The endorsement comes right after Cuomo attacked Mamdani for taking a photo on a recent trip to Uganda with Rebecca Kadaga, a politician who previously pushed to adopt a bill that made homosexuality punishable by life imprisonment there.
