In Saratoga, Democrats win and lose in unexpected places, leading to widespread changes
SARATOGA SPRINGS While it was a big night for Democrats across the region, in Saratoga County, Democrats saw mixed results Tuesday, losing races they expected to easily take in the city and winning big in Republican strongholds like Clifton Park, Malta and Wilton.
In Clifton Park, the most-populated municipality in the county, Democrats won all of the contested seats: Ram Mohan Lalukota won supervisor-at-large on the county Board of Supervisors and Nancy Bellamy and Mario Fantini won two Town Board seats. The results tipped the Town Board into Democratic control. Democrat Dahn Bull also won a fifth term for highway superintendent, and Democrat Caitlin Fantini was elected town clerk.
This leaves Clifton Parks Republican Supervisor Phil Barrett, who is considered one of the most influential politicians in the county as the chair of the Board of Supervisors, in a weakened position of power. He did not return a request for comment.
Its also the beginning of a new chapter for the county Board of Supervisors and the towns, according to Saratoga County Democratic Committee Chair Martha Devaney.
