Former Surry County elections chairman's residency questioned

James Yokeley resigned as chairman of the Surry County Board of Elections in August following his arrest on felony charges, but court documents spanning more than a decade raise questions about whether he was eligible to serve on the board.

Public records show Yokeley consistently listed a Wilmington address in New Hanover County on official documents while claiming Surry County residency for voting and election purposes.

Yokeley was arrested Aug. 28 on charges including felony child abuse and possession of controlled substances. He posted $100,000 bond and resigned his position the same day. The arrest warrant lists his address as 4339 Terrington Drive, Wilmington.

The same Wilmington address appears on court documents dating back to at least 2013, including traffic citations in Watauga County in 2013, Guilford County in 2015 and New Hanover County in 2020.
