Gainey supporters decry mailer advertisement in support of O'Connor
Community organizers and staff from Mayor Ed Gaineys re-election campaign, along with a number of other elected officials, gathered Monday afternoon to condemn a mailer issued in support of Mr. Gaineys opponent, Allegheny County Controller Corey OConnor, that circulated late last week.
On one side, the mailer showed a photo of a dilapidated building with the words The Ed Gainey Legacy. Wasting millions. Rewarding cronies. Hurting neighborhoods underneath. The other side detailed allegations that the mayor had irresponsibly increased his staff size and used public money to pay for consultants, among other things.
Sent to voters in the city, the mailer appeared to tap into previous City Hall controversies and it set off accusations that supporters of Mr. OConnor had crossed a line.
The mailer was paid for by the Common Sense Change Action PAC, an organization that is not directly affiliated with Mr. OConnors campaign but has sent out multiple mailers in support of his candidacy. The political action committee, created earlier this year, has raised $264,500 primarily from donations from local labor organizations and from politicians who have endorsed Mr. OConnor.
The two Democrats will face off in a primary for the mayoral race on May 20.
